Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 5-1/2 furlongs, 4 yo’s and up

Possible overlays                        Morning line

#3 I Am Madison’s                          12/1
#4 Elusive Chief                             5/2
#5 Stray Cat                                 7/2
#8 Sky Ruler                                 15/1
#9 Golden Delight                           12/1
#10 Degreko                                 12/1
#11 High and Mighty                       8/1
#12 The Emerald King                    9/2

This race comes up extremely competitive, so watching the tote board for the proper odds is essential.

The first thing worth noting, is that #12 The Emerald King is the only horse in this race to ever be within a length of the lead at the first or second call in a race less than 7 furlongs. And that is highly unusual in a 5-1/2 furlong maiden claiming race with 12 horses in the field.

However, four of the starters in here have only run one time, so they may show more speed today. Trainer Jack Carava claimed #3 I Am Madison’s out of his Jan. 9 debut at Golden Gate where the horse was 4-wide on the turn, but still gained on the leader. I Am Madison’s earned a 57 Beyer Speed Figure after tiring, and will almost certainly need at least a 71 to beat this competitive field.

Coming back from a six-month layoff, #11 High and Mighty is tied for the best last race Beyer with the 73 he ran against maiden special weights on Aug. 23. Besides the second timers, another that may have hidden ability is #10 Degreko, who is dropping into claiming off three turf races where he faced the best maidens on the grounds.

The morning-line favorite #4 Elusive Chief looks like he’ll be a good bet today. In his last race on Jan. 16, Elusive Chief went 4-wide on the turn and still ran a 73 Beyer. The problem is, he may need to go wide again.

I’ll bet $300 on #4 Elusive Chief if he’s 2/1 to 7/2 only and $200 on The #12 Emerald King at 3/1 or more.

Also, if any of these horses are between 5/2 and 9/1 then I’ll bet the following amounts on them: $250 on #11 High and Mighty, $200 on #3 I Am Madison’s, $150 on #8 Sky Ruler, and $100 on #9 Golden Delight.

When looking at the past performances for #4 Senor Afortunado you see comments like “7-wide into lane” on  Feb. 23, 2008, “5-wide into lane” on Nov. 28, “3-wide into stretch” on Dec. 21, and his last race two weeks ago, “4-wide into lane.”

Rallying wide is a good way to stay out of trouble, but horses who lose too much ground on the turn tend to finish second and third a lot. On Saturday, it was clear that Senor Afortunado was going to be nowhere near the rail, so the big question became would his wide trip cause him to hang in the stretch once again?

And the big answer was, no it would not.

As expected, jockey Joel Rosario had Senor Afortunado rallying in his familiar 4-wide path on the turn. In midstretch, the horse battled with 3-to-2 favorite #1 Six Pack Man, who had just inherited the lead from front-running #3 Captain Charisma.

Nearing the wire, Senor Afortunado hung tough and had enough left to outlast Six Pack Man by a head.

My wagers were $200 to win on Senor Afortunado and $100 on #7 Herecometheirish, who stumbled badly at the start causing jockey Jerry Olguin to fall off.

donald_trump_crazy_face_hot_chick_red_carpet11Working out at San Luis Rey Downs, trainer Peter Miller brought speedster #11 No Limit Poker off a six-month layoff to win convincingly.

Garrett Gomez broke this 4-year-old gelding sharply, but #5 Kinky Rule and #7 Saint Jack  competed for the early lead also. They ran three abreast down the backstretch with Kinky Rule on the rail, No Limit Poker on the outside and Saint Jack in between.

And on the turn, they stayed that way — giving No Limit Poker the dreaded 3-wide trip. But this 4-to-1 shot was such a superior animal of these 11 runners, that Gomez shook of the pace setters in the lane then found another gear when #13 The Emerald King came running.

I had several betting scenarios based on the post time odds, which can be seen by clicking the following link. I ended up betting $200 on #11 No Limit Poker, and $150 on both #6 Sky Patriot, at 5-to-1, and #13 The Emerald King, at 6-to-1.

Maiden King cifoonquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 5-1/2 furlongs, 4 yos and up

Possible overlays                          Morning line

#1 Water                                          6/1
#5 Kinky Rule                                     9/2
#6 Sky Patriot                                    5/1
#7 Saint Jack                                     6/1
#11 No Limit Poker                             5/1
#12 Second Hand Lion                       7/2
#13 The Emerald King                       8/1

Early speed is a tremendous advantage in 5-1/2 furlong races for older maiden claimers and nobody has more of it here than #11 No Limit Poker. This Peter Miller-trained gelding hasn’t been out since running just off the pace in two sprints at Hollywood Park last summer. Garrett Gomez is slated to ride.

Trainer Clifford Sise, who has a good record in this type of race, should make an impact as he sends out both #5 Kinky Rule and #6 Sky Patriot. Second-time starter #7 Saint Jack had a decent debut and may improve.

If the pace is too fast and the race falls apart in the stretch, then I can see any of five other horses winning, including #1 Water, #9 Cut, #10 Royal Albert, #12 Second Hand Lion and #13 The Emerald King.

I will bet $300 on #11 No Limit Poker at 2/1 to 7/2, but reduce my wager to $200 if his post time odds are 4/1 and up. Also, I will put $250 on #6 Sky Patriot and #13 The Emerald King, but only at odds of 2/1 to 7/2.

If none of those three horses are 2/1 to 7/2, then at 4/1 to 9/1, I want $150 on #5 Kinky Rule and #6 Sky Patriot. Then I want another $150 on whoever goes off highest — but less than 10/1 — among #7 Saint Jack, #12 Second Hand Lion and #13 The Emerald King.

Jockey Joel Rosario won his second of four races Saturday aboard #7 No Guessing

Jockey Joel Rosario won his second of four races Saturday aboard #7 No Guessing

The money kept pouring in on #14 Classic Demand, and there was only one reason why.

The morning line maker installed this 5-year-old maiden at 12-to-1 and who could blame him. Classic Demand had only raced one time, which was in March 2008, and she didn’t run badly that day, but her 60 Beyer Speed Figure didn’t impress anybody either.

Furthermore, her workouts leading up to this race were at regular intervals, but they were slow, slow, slow.

There was only reason anybody would put their hard-earned money on a horse like this: Peter Eurton.

Eurton, who has won with six of his last 13 starters or 46 percent, is turning whatever he touches into gold these days.

At post time, when the bell rang and the gates sprang open, Classic Demand was bet to 5-to-1 and she almost pulled off the upset. But she  couldn’t stay with #7 No Guessing in the stretch. Classic Demand, however, did finished second, 1-3/4 lengths ahead of third-place finisher, Connie the Queen.

I ended up betting $150 on both #9 Sally Says So and #14 Classic Demand, and another $100 on #12 Happyinexcess. I was closely watching the odds on #7 No Guessing, but I needed 4-to-1 and she ended up at 7-to-2.

#11 Stylin Deputy                         7/2
#12 Happyinexcess                      12/1
#14 Classic Demand                     12/1

The median Beyer Speed Figure for this race is 69 and several in here have shown they are capable of that. The Carla Gaines-trained #6 Holladay Dixie ran within three points of the median Beyer in six of her last seven races and is dropping in class today.

However, that resume probably means she’ll be overbet.

Breaking in the next stall, #7 No Guessing ran a 65 while going wide on the turn on Dec. 28, and #11 Stylin Deputy earned a 67 Beyer for his March 2008 effort where he also got a wide trip.

Others coming off recent layoffs who could improve are #9 Sally Says So and #14 Classic Demand. Peter Eurton, Classic Demand’s trainer, has won with six of his last 13 starters at this meet. Finally, #12 Happyinexcess flashed good early speed in his debut.

I plan to watch the tote board for action on the layoff horses. I’ll bet $200 on any of these horses at 2/1 to 7/2: #4 Connie the Queen, #9 Sally Says So, #11 Stylin Deputy and #14 Classic Demand. And at 4/1 to 9/1, I’ll bet $150 on Sally Says So,  #7 No Guessing, and #14 Classic Demand.

Finally, at 8/1 to 19/1, I’ll put $100 on #12 Happyinexcess.

Jockey Chantal Sutherland got #8 Magna Cum Laude to break his maiden on his 16th try

Jockey Chantal Sutherland got #8 Magna Cum Laude to break his maiden on his 16th try

It was only his third attempt at maiden claimers, but it took #8 Magna Cum Laude sixteen races to earn his diploma. Trainer Robert Hess got this gelding from Aidan O’Brien who had been running him in sprint races on the Irish courses — Fairyhouse, Dundalk and Naas.

Magna Cum Laude was given lasix, which is illegal in Ireland, but didn’t hit the board in six Southern California tries against maiden special weights — five of which were on the grass.

Hess dropped him to maiden claiming on Oct. 26 and the horse responded with a clear lead for most of the 7-furlong race, as he tried to wire the field but faded to third. On Monday, jockey Chantal Sutherland put Magna Cum Laude back on the lead and he survived a late run by #1 Larrylarrylarry to hit the winner’s circle.

I bet $300 on Larrylarrylarry, who went off at 4-to-1, and he ran well to finish second. I also considered #10 Six Pack Man, but he was bet below my minimum odds of 2-to-1.

On the rail, #1 Larrylarrylarry is another who could get the job done at the right price.

I will bet $400 on #10 Six Pack Man at 2/1 to 7/2, but only $200 if he drifts up to 4/1 or higher. Also, I want $300 to win on #1 Larrylarrylarry at 2/1 or above.uy

imgres22In a five-horse field populated with horses that hit the board a total of one time, a champion Canadian jockey and trainer teamed up on #4 Forster Hall to go wire-to-wire.

Woodbine-based jockey Patrick Husbands, who was voted Canada’s outstanding jockey in 2008, eased Forster Hall to the lead and was able to set reasonable fractions that left the horse with plenty in the tank at the finish. It was the first Santa Anita win for Husbands, 35, who has won Canada’s Sovereign Award for Outstanding Jockey a total of six times.

Forster Hall’s trainer Mark Casse, also from Woodbine, is no slouch either. He won the 2008 Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer, a prize he also took in 2006 and 2007.

I bet $200 to win on this horse and he paid $6.20. I was also monitoring the odds on #2 Izemine for a bet at 5-to-1 or more, but his post time odds were 7-to-2.

Trainer Peter Eurton, who sends out #2 Izemine, has won a couple of similar races to this with first-time starters. Therefore, I will give him a shot in here, although I won’t bet  too much.

Of the horses who have run, none has approached the middle 80’s median Beyer Speed Figure that typically wins these races. Although he hasn’t been out since March, #4 Forster Hall might be ready to unleash a winning performance and I will watch the tote board for clues.

Mike Machowsky, the trainer of #3 Wizard Man, has a good record with debut horses, but most of them were 2-year-olds. Wizard Man has some decent workouts and the jockey is all right.

I will bet $200 on #4 Forster Hall at 2/1 to 7/2 only and $100 on #2 Izemine at 5/1 or more.

Results, Santa Anita Wednesday Race 6 — won $840

imgres21Trainer Rafael Becerra continued his success with recently laid off horses by getting #3 Raise Again to the winner’s circle at 4-to-1.

Over the last two years, Becerra has won with this same move at least six times, paying anywhere from $10 to $23.

No doubt, in this race, Raise Again got a perfect trip. Jockey Martin Garcia laid five lengths off dueling long shots #7 Black Point and #9 Makor’s Girl, who blazed through fractions of 21.88 seconds for the quarter mile and 44.62 seconds for the half.

That is really motoring for a 6-1/2 furlong race for $25,000 maiden claimers and both of them staggered home in the stretch. Raise Again came on the outside and “powered away” by 3-1/2 official lengths, according to the equibase chart caller.

In the wagering, I planned to bet $300 on Raise Again at 2-to-1 to 7-to-2, but reduce my outlay to $200 at 4-to-1 or higher. I was a bit unfortunate as the odds on Raise Again sat below 4-to-1 until the final minute when he blinked up to his final price of 4.2-to-1. So, I ended up betting $200 on him instead of $300.

Jockey Michael Baze gunned #13 Outlaw Yodler from the gate and never looked back

The betting was frosty on #9 Thornmark, who was 2-to-1 on the morning line but opened up at 9-to-2. The five-year-old gelding, who was running for the second time after an 11-month layoff , finally closed at 5-to-2.

But when the gates open, Thornmark never made an impact as #13 Outlaw Yodler shot straight for the lead and dominated the race. Jockey Joe Talamo got #11 Hold This up for second at 7-to-1, while #10 Go Cory Go was off the board after being well backed at 3/1.

Outlaw Yodler had showed decent speed in his five previous tries, but always faded in the stretch. Today, trainer Peter Eurton removed the blinkers, which may have helped the 4-year-old relax.

In the end, I bet $300 on Thornmark and another $150 on Hold This.

Also, trainer David Bernstein won at 19 percent last year, so he seems to know what he’s doing.

Others who were recently laid off that might run big include #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado, #10 Go Cory Go and #11 Hold This.

I’ll bet $300 to win on #9 Thornmark at 2/1 to 7/2.

But if Thornmark is 9-to-5 or lower, then instead I’ll take $200 to win on #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado and #10 Go Cory Go, but only if their post time odds are 2/1 to 7/2.

Also, I’m betting $150 on #11 Hold This at 2/1 to 9/1 regardless of Thornmark’s price.

Results, Saturday Santa Anita Race 9 — won $900

imgres9When the gate sprang open on Dec. 13, debuter Sleep Tight had a problem and broke slowly to lose several lengths. She didn’t quit, though, making a nice run through the lane to dead-heat for second.

Today, she was stretching out from 6 furlongs to 7 and once I saw her break well, I knew I was in good shape.

The race set up with #8 Silent Smoke, an 11-to-1 shot, setting the pace while being followed by favorite #10 Sunny Peace and #2 Sleep Tight.  But at the top of the stretch, Sleep Tight had nowhere to run, as she was being blocked by the pace setters who ran side-by-side.

Finally, jockey Michael Baze angled her out for room and Sleep Tight ran like she was shot out of a cannon. The race was never in doubt late, as she won by 2-1/2 lengths to #11 Tiz Salsa, who closed well.

I wagered $300 on Sleep Tight, who closed at 3/1 odds.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 5-1/2 furlongs, 4-year-olds & up

Possible overlays                                Morning line

#3 Mort Robbins                                         6/1
#11 Stray Cat                                           7/2
#12 The Emerald King                               5 /1
#13 Sailboat Sam                                       8/1
#14 All About Larry                                   6/1

Lots of horses have been laid off recently in this race. Many of them have had sharp workouts, however, like that of #3 Mort Robbins on Dec. 27. The Barry Abrams-trained 4-year-old worked out five furlongs in 59 seconds, which was the third best of 128 at the distance.

The top speed of the race is #13 Sailboat Sam, but I’m going to have to follow the money in here.

Therefore, I’ll bet $400 on any of the following horses that go off at 2/1 to 7/2: #3 Mort Robbins, #12 Emerald King, #13 Sailboat Sam or #14 All About Larry.  If none fall into that range, then I’ll bet $150 on #11 Stray Cat at 7/2 or higher. Regardless of whether the first two betting scenerios play out, I’ll put $100 on #13 Sailboat Sam at 7/2 or greater.

Results Santa Anita Sunday Race 9 — lost $400

ahhhhhh-by-rock-and-racehorses3The winner, #6 Dolly Daggers, just outclassed them in here. It was her 18th start, but 12 of them were in Europe and the five previous in the United States were at much higher levels. She paid a decent price at 3/1, but I instead went with a group of second-time starters that looked like they had potential to fire big. I bet $200 on #4 Sally Says So, and $100 on both #9 Coconut Telegraph and #11 No Guessing. Trained by Mike Mitchell, who is winning at 24 percent for 2008, Coconut Telegraph had a clear lead for much of the race at 5/1 before succumbing in midstretch.

#9 Coconut Telegraph                             10/1
#11 No Guessing                                       5/1

Coming off the long layoff, #4 Sally Says So could be the surprise in this race. And what’s this, a Mike Mitchell trained second-timer named Coconut Telegraph at 10/1? I’ve got to take a long look at that one. And finally, #11 No Guessing is trained by Kathy Walsh, who won a race on Saturday with horse making its second start who was adding blinkers, just like this one.

In the betting, I want $200 to win on #4 Sally Say So between 2/1 and 9/1, and $100 on any of these horses whose post time odds are less than 10/1 #7 Lacey Leilah, #8 Makor’s Girl, #9 Coconut Telegraph and  #11 No Guessing.

jockey-paddock-area-by-aceoutwide1201Wagered $250 on the Clifford Sise-trainee Kinky Rule, who was #9, and he led for most of the race, but weakened in the stretch. The winner, #5 Squire Trelawny was one of a group of four contenders that I had my eye on, but he was over bet, I believe, at 3/1.
