Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King cifoonquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 5-1/2 furlongs, 4 yos and up

Possible overlays                          Morning line

#1 Water                                          6/1
#5 Kinky Rule                                     9/2
#6 Sky Patriot                                    5/1
#7 Saint Jack                                     6/1
#11 No Limit Poker                             5/1
#12 Second Hand Lion                       7/2
#13 The Emerald King                       8/1

Early speed is a tremendous advantage in 5-1/2 furlong races for older maiden claimers and nobody has more of it here than #11 No Limit Poker. This Peter Miller-trained gelding hasn’t been out since running just off the pace in two sprints at Hollywood Park last summer. Garrett Gomez is slated to ride.

Trainer Clifford Sise, who has a good record in this type of race, should make an impact as he sends out both #5 Kinky Rule and #6 Sky Patriot. Second-time starter #7 Saint Jack had a decent debut and may improve.

If the pace is too fast and the race falls apart in the stretch, then I can see any of five other horses winning, including #1 Water, #9 Cut, #10 Royal Albert, #12 Second Hand Lion and #13 The Emerald King.

I will bet $300 on #11 No Limit Poker at 2/1 to 7/2, but reduce my wager to $200 if his post time odds are 4/1 and up. Also, I will put $250 on #6 Sky Patriot and #13 The Emerald King, but only at odds of 2/1 to 7/2.

If none of those three horses are 2/1 to 7/2, then at 4/1 to 9/1, I want $150 on #5 Kinky Rule and #6 Sky Patriot. Then I want another $150 on whoever goes off highest — but less than 10/1 — among #7 Saint Jack, #12 Second Hand Lion and #13 The Emerald King.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden Special Weight, 7 furlongs, 3-yo fillies

Possible overlays                    Morning line

#1 Air Fair                                      7/2
#2 Black Magic Mama                       2/1
#4 Broken Silence                            5/2

For a maiden, #2 Black Magic Mama has been keeping unbelievable company. Of her five races, she ran in three grade 1’s that included the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Of course, she lost all five times, but two of them were to Stardom Bound who is the probable Eclipse Award winner.

Stardom Bound’s trainer Christopher Paasch saddles #1 Air Fair in this race. Air Fair is making her third start and she has a good running style for 7 furlongs.

Of the three second-time starters running, I like #4 Broken Silence the best, but only because she’s been working out better than #5 Panorama Ridge. I acknowledge that you can’t ask for better connections than the ones associated with Panorama Ridge, as Bobby Frankel trains and Garrett Gomez rides.

I will wager $200 on #2 Black Magic Mama at 2/1 or more. If her post time odds are 9/5 or less, then I’ll take $150 on #1 Air Fair at 3/1 or better.

If for some reason those two horse are bet below 2/1 then my bet is $150 on #4 Broken Silence at 5/2 or more.

Jockey Joel Rosario won his second of four races Saturday aboard #7 No Guessing

Jockey Joel Rosario won his second of four races Saturday aboard #7 No Guessing

The money kept pouring in on #14 Classic Demand, and there was only one reason why.

The morning line maker installed this 5-year-old maiden at 12-to-1 and who could blame him. Classic Demand had only raced one time, which was in March 2008, and she didn’t run badly that day, but her 60 Beyer Speed Figure didn’t impress anybody either.

Furthermore, her workouts leading up to this race were at regular intervals, but they were slow, slow, slow.

There was only reason anybody would put their hard-earned money on a horse like this: Peter Eurton.

Eurton, who has won with six of his last 13 starters or 46 percent, is turning whatever he touches into gold these days.

At post time, when the bell rang and the gates sprang open, Classic Demand was bet to 5-to-1 and she almost pulled off the upset. But she  couldn’t stay with #7 No Guessing in the stretch. Classic Demand, however, did finished second, 1-3/4 lengths ahead of third-place finisher, Connie the Queen.

I ended up betting $150 on both #9 Sally Says So and #14 Classic Demand, and another $100 on #12 Happyinexcess. I was closely watching the odds on #7 No Guessing, but I needed 4-to-1 and she ended up at 7-to-2.

Bob Baffert trains two horses in here, but I like the second timer #4 Wall Street Wonder better than #9 Mythical Power. Joel Rosario, a decent rider, takes over for Corey Nakatani and I think the move will help Wall Street Wonder’s price.

First timers #2 Vanquest and #6 Bridging look promising, but Bridging may be over bet, according to the morning line.

I will wager $400 to win on #4 Wall Street Wonder at 2/1 to 9/1 but  just $100 at 10/1 and up. Also, I want $200 to win on both #2 Vanquest and #6 Bridging at 10/1 to 19/1.

#11 Stylin Deputy                         7/2
#12 Happyinexcess                      12/1
#14 Classic Demand                     12/1

The median Beyer Speed Figure for this race is 69 and several in here have shown they are capable of that. The Carla Gaines-trained #6 Holladay Dixie ran within three points of the median Beyer in six of her last seven races and is dropping in class today.

However, that resume probably means she’ll be overbet.

Breaking in the next stall, #7 No Guessing ran a 65 while going wide on the turn on Dec. 28, and #11 Stylin Deputy earned a 67 Beyer for his March 2008 effort where he also got a wide trip.

Others coming off recent layoffs who could improve are #9 Sally Says So and #14 Classic Demand. Peter Eurton, Classic Demand’s trainer, has won with six of his last 13 starters at this meet. Finally, #12 Happyinexcess flashed good early speed in his debut.

I plan to watch the tote board for action on the layoff horses. I’ll bet $200 on any of these horses at 2/1 to 7/2: #4 Connie the Queen, #9 Sally Says So, #11 Stylin Deputy and #14 Classic Demand. And at 4/1 to 9/1, I’ll bet $150 on Sally Says So,  #7 No Guessing, and #14 Classic Demand.

Finally, at 8/1 to 19/1, I’ll put $100 on #12 Happyinexcess.

ShowVivor start delayed until Sunday

Because of technical difficulties that caused limited access to entries for ShowVivor, the beginning of contest was moved from Saturday to Sunday.

Everyone who entered, whether they selected losing picks or not on Saturday, is still alive.

And registration remains open until 12:15 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday.

ShowVivor 2009 begins today at Santa Anita

showvivor4A free $5,000 on line handicapping contest starts today on the Santa Anita website.

ShowVivor contestants select one runner a day to hit the board and if successful they survive until the next day. But if their pick doesn’t finish first, second or third, then the contest is over for them.

The contest ends when only one player is left, or on April 19, which is the last day of the Santa Anita meet. First place is $3,000 plus airfare to Las Vegas with two nights at the Las Vegas Hilton, second place is $1,500 and third prize is $500.

Players must be registered before 12:15 p.m. PST. Go to www.santaanita.com for all of the details.

No main track maiden sprints Saturday at Santa Anita

finish-line-at-santa-anita-park-by-rhetoricruSanta Anita carded no maiden sprints on the main track today, so I have nothing to shoot at.

The only race less than one mile for non winners is scheduled for 6-1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course.

But I see that on Sunday the fourth race is a maiden slated for 6 furlongs on the main track, and on Monday I’m looking forward to tackling two 7 furlongs races for maiden claimers.

No ‘capping today

Too busy counting the money I made yesterday.

No seriously, I’ve got one of those things called a job and sometimes it gets in the way. You probably have one too, so you know what I mean. But as soon as I make my first $10 mill betting horses, I swear, I’m going to quit with that job nonsense.

But I did quickly look through the past performances today and the only horse that I really like is #10 Thunder Babydoll at 7/2 to 19/1 in the eighth.

When trainer Jeff Mullins teams up with Garrett Gomez they're winning at better than 60 percent

Coming into the race, jockey Garrett Gomez had won on eight of the last 13 horses he rode for trainer Jeff Mullins.

Now, you can make it nine of 14.

In his debut race on Dec. 28, Mullins’ #6 Hasty Trend lagged toward the rear as rider Pedro Arambula was restraining the animal. Hasty Trend made a nice run that day in the stretch to finish up well.

But on Thursday, Gomez had Hasty Trend in the race from the opening bell. He ran beside speedster #1 Rochelle’s Jimmy before taking over in the stretch.

I planned to bet Hasty Trend at 2-to-1 or better, but horse players love betting Gomez and they hammered him to 6-to-5.

So I switched to plan B, which was to bet #1 Rochelle’s Jimmy who set the pace at 22-t0-1 before finishing fourth; and #4 Coleville, who finished second at 7-to-2.

#7 Black Point                                          15/1
#8 Natpolean                                            3/1

Coming off a recent long layoff has been a great money-making move for trainer Rafael Becerra in this type of race. In 2008, he did it three times: the first, on March 14 paying $23.60,  then on April 24 at $10, and the third time on Oct. 3 paying $15 . In 2007, it was Becerra again with the same move on Jan. 24 paying $19.20 and on Aug. 30 at $19.80.

Today, he has #3 Raise Again who ran OK at the level in Spring 2007 and can run the 65-70 Beyer Speed Figure necessary to win. Breaking beside her will be #4 Secret Potion, who ran a 57 Beyer in her debut for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer before he shipped her south from Golden Gate Fields.

Connie the Queen, #6, is another off a long layoff. She last ran July 16 in a Suffolk Downs turf race at 1-mile and 70 yards. In addition to traveling to lowly Suffolk, this mare’s seven races included stops at Aqueduct, Belmont, Saratoga, the Meadowlands and Finger Lakes.

If she gets bet, I will like her more.

It seemed to me that jockey Victor Espinoza steadied #8 Natpolean at the break during her first race on Nov. 29. She trailed for most of the way, but got more involved the next time she ran on Dec. 20. Her trainer Patrick Gallagher does better, I believe, with horses that have had at least two starts.

I will bet $300 on #3 Raise Again at 2/1 to 7/2, but only $200 if she drifts to 4/1 or higher.

Also, if #3 Connie the Queen is 2/1 to 7/2, then I’ll bet $100 to win on her, and I’ll put $150 on #4 Secret Potion at 3/1 to 7/1 only.

Waddup G won easily for trainer Doug O'Neill after dropping in class and cutting back to a sprint

This horse seemed to be moving like a tremendous machine.

Waddup G obviously stood out in this 12-horse field as she eased to the lead while four-wide on the turn and pulled away to win by 6-1/4 official lengths.

The Doug O’Neill trainee was dropping into this low level claiming sprint from maiden special weight where she showed speed in three routes. Although she never got close to winning those races, she still ran the two best Beyer Speed Figures of this group.

Sure, sometimes they don’t reproduce the Beyers, but this time the class showed.

I was prepared to wager $150 on #12 Waddup G at 2-to-1, but she went into the gate at 9-to-5 and stayed there. Others I was watching included second timer #13 Shawnie Ora and #5 Tan Tan, a first-timer. But their prices drifted out of my odds ranges, so I couldn’t bet them either.

#13 Shawnie Ora                                       12/1

I probably won’t end up playing anything in here.

I got a late start handicapping this one and I am looking at the tote board now. With 15 minutes to post, the favorite #12 Waddup G is 8/5. I like her because she ran a 63 Beyer Speed Figure in a route race, which is just below the median needed to win this race. But I wouldn’t bet her unless she’s at least 2/1.

Second-time starter #13 Shawnie Ora is 7-to-1 on the tote board now, but I’m only interested at 2/1 to 9/2. Also, #5 Tan Tan is an OK bet at 10/1 to 19/1, but she’s 21-to-1.

I’m noticing surprise betting action on #3 It’s Partytime, who is 10-to-1 on the morning line, but the tote board says 7-to-2. She has good early speed, which is much more valuable in shorter sprints than 6-1/2 furlongs.

I will bet $150 on #12 Waddup G at 2/1 or higher, $150 on #13 Shawnie Ora at 2/1 to 9/2, and $100 on #5 Tan Tan at 10/1 to 19/1.

Trainer Mike Puype's horses are firing well off layoffs right now

Trainer Mike Puype's second timers are firing well off layoffs right now

Recently trainer Mike Puype’s been doing an outstanding job with second-time starters coming back from long layoffs. On Wednesday, Mossad won the fifth race for him, paying $12, and Puype took the first race Friday with second-time starter Ciccina. The 5-to-2 shot hadn’t raced since May 11.

In the eighth, #7 Kafwain’s Belle fit the same profile — a second-time starter trained by Puype coming off a long layoff. And as it was rallying up the rail to grab the money at 5-to-1, it dawned on me that a trend may be developing here. Now, I just hope it’s not too late to join the party.

Although, Kafwain’s Belle was bet to 4-to-1 early, I planned to put $200 on her only if she was 2/1 to 7/2 at post time. I also had tight betting ranges for $200 bets on #3 Silent Western — who was bet too low — #10 Eleni Mou and #12 Sally Says So, whose odds were too high.

Anyway, I ended up playing $100 on #11 Ata Honour, at 7-to-1, #12 Sally Says So, 26-to-1, and 7-to-1 shot #13 Saint’s Crown. Sally Says So made a nice run for second while never threatening the winner.

Trainer Barry Abrams got Unusual Heat gelding #1 Too Much Heat to win his second lifetime start, but paid just $5.40

In a race where it was difficult for me to find potentially profitable angles, the Barry Abrams-trained #1 Too Much Heat got the early lead and seemed to get stronger as the race got longer.

His only real challenge came from #4 Jacob’s Little Bro who broke slowly, but made a sharp middle move up the rail. Jacob’s Little Bro came within a neck of the lead on the turn, then faded.

Had he been 10/1, I would have bet Jacob’s Little Bro, but his post-time odds were just 5/1 so I didn’t wager at all.

Abrams is a cancer survivor and partly attributes his success battling the disease to the hope of watching babies run from his sire Unusual Heat.

#11 Ata Honour                                      8/1
#12 Sally Says So                                 12/1
#13 Saint’s Crown                                  5/1

I’ll be watching the tote board for clues. If there’s heavy betting on any of three horses coming off layoffs — #7 Kafwain’s Belle, #10 Eleni Mou or #12 Sally Says So — then I’m climbing on board, too.

I believe jockey Jon Court on #13 Saints Crown will try for the lead as this mare wasn’t rating well last time, but a wide trip may be that horse’s downfall. And Eleni Mou has better speed than what appears in her past performance lines so I expect her to be right up front, too.

Silent Western, #3, ran a winning race on Dec. 7 as her 70 Beyer Speed Figure is the median needed to win this type of race. Flew First Class ran her down that day, but Silent Western was 2-1/2 lengths clear of third place and she defeated nine other horses.

I will bet $200 on #7 Kafwain’s Belle, #10 Eleni Mou or #12 Sally Says So at 2/1 to 7/2 only. If #3 Silent Western is 3/1 to 9/2 then I’ll bet $200 on her.

Also, I will bet $100 on any of these scenarios — #3 Silent Western and #11 Ata Honour at 5/1 or more; #12 Sally Says So at 7/1 and above, and #13 Saint’s Crown at 6/1 or better.
