at-pawn-shops-the-cash-strapped-trade-in-memoriesAlthough he didn’t look like much in the Daily Racing Form, #5 My Man Sumo outclassed this field while dominating the race from start to finish.

It was a tremendous training job by the underrated Rafael Becerra, who does good work bringing maidens off layoffs. He took My Man Sumo over from Wesley Ward after the gelding had run three unspectacular races last summer at Del Mar and Fairplex.

My Man Sumo, who last ran on Sept. 13, had always shown speed, but couldn’t last. Becerra hid this horse’s talent from horseplayers by working him out slowly, but jockey Alex Solis broke him well from the gate and he was never challenged for the lead, winning by four lengths.

The favorite trained by Mike Mitchell, #4 Morton Owen, made a wide run on the turn then flattened out in the stretch while Bob Baffert’s runner #7 Only Be Cause pushed the pace then came up empty late.

I bet $250 on #5 My Man Sumo and collected $2,025. But I also put $400 on #4 Morton Owen, so I profited a total of $1,375 on the race.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $32,000, 6-1/2 furlongs, 3 yo fillies

Possible overlays                         Morning line

#2 Sister Derek                                 15/1
#3 Latego Light                                 6/1
#11 Fine Time to Leave                     3/1
#13 Lanie’s Way                                 4/1

The median winning Beyer Speed Figure for this class is 65, which bodes well for #3 Latego Light who ran a 64 Beyer when she last raced on Feb. 16.

In that February race, Latego Light was going a mile and she came running late with a spirited rally.

Mike Mitchell trains #11 Fine Time to Leave, who is probably much better than she looks. If almost anybody else trained this horse I would want nothing to do with it, but Mitchell won with 24 of his last 66 maiden claimers and anybody who bet them all would be ahead by 24 cents on the dollar. I have to respect that.

When Mitchell’s maiden claimers are live, I noticed, their odds are often bet below 3-to-1, so I will be watching the tote board.

Starting for her third time off of a six-month layoff, #13 Lanie’s Way could win if she improves by a few lengths or if none of the other contenders run their best. Another positive clue with Lanie’s Way would be strong wagering action. Also, first-time starter #2 Sister Derek is OK if the price is right.

If #11 Fine Time to Leave is 5/2 or less, then I will wager $400 to win on her; if she’s 3/1 or 7/2 then just $150; if 4/1 or more than I won’t bet her.

Also, I want $200 to win on #3 Latego Light at 5/2 to 9/1, but only $100 at 10/1 or more.  Finally, I will take $150 to win on #2 Sister Derek at 10/1 to 19/1 only.

bob-baffert-hats-at-the-129th-kentucky-derby-weekend

After trying route races, trainer Bob Baffert found that Hurley's Way likes 7 furlongs

On Aug. 15, Hurley’s Way ran sixth in a Del Mar sprint and afterward Bob Baffert claimed him for $100,000. Over the next five months, Baffert raced his new runner in three route races, two of which were in the maiden special weight ranks, but Hurley’s Way never hit the board.

Finally on Jan. 19, Baffert bit the bullet and dropped Hurley’s Way into a 7-furlong maiden $32,000 claiming sprint, and the colt responded by almost winning after an extremely wide trip.

The race must have showed Baffert that his best chance with Hurley’s Way would be in the claiming ranks at 7 furlongs. So, the trainer spent the last few months tuning up his runner, then waited for the racing secretary to write a 7-furlong race for $32,000 claimers.

And like a baseball player waiting for his pitch, when Baffert finally got a fat one down the middle he knocked it for a loop.

When this race began, jockey Joel Rosario took Hurley’s Way to the back of the nine-horse field then made his move by riding the rail on the turn. In the stretch, Hurley’s Way rolled by pace setter #9 Olympic Magic with Rosario giving his mount a couple of swats of the whip 50 yards from the wire just to let the colt know that the race wasn’t over yet.

About the only thing wrong with this whole scenario was that Hurley’s Way’s price dipped below my 2-to-1 minimum acceptable odds. What can I say, but that I’m greedy. Not only do I want the best horse in the race, but I want good odds on him, too.

So, I ended up going to Plan B, which was to forget about my $250 Hurley’s Way bet and put $200 on the longer of #4 Mont La Salle and #9 Olympic Magic. Since Mont La Salle was 7/1, he got the money.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $32,000, 7 furlongs, 3 yo’s

Possible overlays                          Morning line

#4 Mont La Salle                                 4/1
#8 Hurley’s Way                                  5/2
#9 Olympic Magic                                3/1

This looks like a three-horse race to me.

The Ronald Ellis-trained #9 Olympic Magic has the best early speed and has been running Beyer numbers in the mid-to-upper 60’s recently.

In his last race, #4 Mont La Salle was wide on both turns while still earning a 65 Beyer Speed Figure, so it seems reasonable that he can run in the low 70’s.

On Jan. 19, #8 Hurley’s Way swung six or seven wide rounding the turn in a 7 furlong sprint. He didn’t have the final gear in the stretch to get by Jazzin Razz that day, but I think Bob Baffert learned something about his horse. After four previous unsuccessful tries at various class levels and distances, I think Baffert decided that Hurley’s Way was a 7-furlong horse that could win a $32,000 claiming race.

Hurley’s Way hasn’t run since Jan. 19, as Baffert’s been tuning him up and he looks to be ready to run a big one.

I will bet $250 on #8 Hurley’s Way at 2/1 or better, but if he’s bet to 9/5 or less then I want $200 on whoever is a longer price between #4 Mont Las Salle and #9 Olympic Magic.

Results, Santa Anita Saturday Race 10 — won $200

cash-pile-royalty-free-stock-photoMaking her second lifetime start, #10 Pedo Veijo sat just off the pace before jockey Chantal Sutherland steered her through a seam at the top of the stretch and the filly sprinted by the leaders.

In her first race on Feb. 27, Pedo Viejo hesitated at the break to lose four lengths, but showed some ability while running. The slow start last time, and subsequently low 59 Beyer Speed Figure, was probably the reason Pedo Viejo was a better price than a similar-looking second time starter in the race, #9 Atta’ Girl.

During my betting, my plan was to make a small wager on the longer of the two between Pedo Viejo and Atta’s Girl, as long as their odds fell in the range of 2/1 to 5/1. But my main bet — the horse I really liked — was #14 Humane.

In her Feb. 5 debut, Humane had a horrible trip, but still almost won the race. On Saturday, she broke in midpack then swooped up six-wide entering the stretch with a major move, but it seemed that jockey Alex Solis was not encouraging her too much so she flattened out.

The best distance for this horse is likely 6-1/2 to 7 furlongs and I am sure she can run a Beyer Speed Figure in the mid-to-high 70s on her best day. This last race will merely darken Humane’s form, which should allow her odds to be a bit better when she finally does win.

At the window, I bet $350 on Humane at 5/1; $50 on speedster #5 Princess Quinn at 87/1 and $150 on the winner, Pedo Viejo at 4/1. I collected $750 after betting $550.

#2 Such a Shame                        20/1
#4 Barney Bass                           9/2
#8 Self Defense                          15/1

It is hard to ignore the 73 Beyer Speed Figure run by #1 Astoria Renter on Feb. 26., and if this horse is 5-to-1 he’s  probably a good bet.

But I think #4 Barney Bass has a great chance to win, also. He flashed good speed for more than a half mile during a 7 furlong race on March 4 then faded away. I think Barney Bass is better than morning line favorite #6 Jimmy Two Times.

I’ll be watching the tote board on two first timers, #2 Such a Shame and #8 Self Defense. Such a Shame is owned by Paul Reddam whose horses often win their debuts. And owner/trainer Craig Lewis has popped with two of his last 10 Larry The Legend So. Cal. first time starters. One of them paid $27.40 and the other $28.60.

I will put $200 to win on #4 Barney Bass at 3/1 or more, and $150 to win on #2 Such a Shame at 5/1 to 19/1. Also, I will take $100 on #8 Self Defense at 8/1 to 19/1.

Jockey Tyler Baze won tight photo finish on #7 Lahcotah that paid $33.40

Bob Baffert had #13 Only Be Cause ready to run. This 2-to-1 shot led by a slim margin for much of the stretch, but  couldn’t quite hang in there as #7 Lahcotah nailed him in the last jump.

As the race began, Only Be Cause sat a length or two off of pacesetters #10 Downtown Banker, #5 Pemba at U.T.K. and Lahcotah. Entering the stretch, Downtown Banker shook free, as Lahcotah dropped back three lengths.

Jockey Jesus Rios was all over Only Be Cause as he pulled next to Downtown Banker in midstretch and battled head-and-head with him to the wire. But, surprisingly, Lahcotah came again on the outside with a quick surge to nail them both.

I bet $350 on Only Be Cause at 2-to-1.

Comeandcatchme, #11, paid a shocking $140 to win for trainer Art Sherman

Comeandcatchme, #11, paid a shocking $140 to win for trainer Art Sherman

This group of maiden claimers appeared to be weak, as none of them approached the winning 68 median Beyer Speed Figure for this class in their past performances.

Therefore, a case could be made for spreading deep and landing on a 65-to-1 shot like #11 Comeandcatchme. But the way I look at these races is that the people who hit this horse will probably play more than 100 bombs before they cash another at 65-to-1.

In other words, in the long run it doesn’t pay to play these huge prices.

Comeandcatchme, who was making his second lifetime start for trainer Art Sherman, took the lead out of the gate in her Feb. 5 debut then faded away with very little urging from jockey Brice Blanc. On Saturday, this filly stalked the pace behind #10 Champagneforchelle and drew away in the stretch.

I bet $150 on first-time starter #4 Serena’s Echo and $100 to win on #8 Jet Set Lass, but neither of them hit the board.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $32,000, 5-1/2 furlongs, 3 yo fillies

Possible overlays                           Morning line

#1 Lanie’s Way                                      4/1
#4 Serena’s Echo                                  15/1
#7 A Taco Short                                   3/1
#8 Jet Set Lass                                    12/1
#9 Play Reveille                                    9/2

The median Beyer Speed Figure for this race is a 68 and either this is going to be a weak race for the class or one of these runners is going to pop a lifetime best Beyer number.

The horse that has shown the quickest quarter mile burst is #8 Jet Set Lass and that’s important at 5-1/2 furlongs. Jet Set Lass is better than she shows in the Daily Racing Form where she hasn’t been less than 20-to-1 in her last four races.

In her last race on Feb 15, Jet Set Lass appeared to want to make a run in the stretch, but was stuck behind a wall of horses. When she finally got going, the race was nearly over.

Breaking from the rail, #1 Lanie’s Way ran well on Feb. 22, which was her first race back in six months. Also, #7 A Taco Short has been training well and she gained good ground in the stretch of her Feb. 5 debut. In that race, A Taco Short earned a 62, which is the best overall Beyer Speed Figure of these fillies.

Of the three first timers running, #4 Serena’s Echo is a good gamble at the right price.

Finally, #9 Play Reveille is owned by Harris Farms, Inc. whose maidens usually win early and are often heavily bet when they’re live. This Northern California farm has its own Thoroughbred trainer and race track which allows their runners to come to Southern California ready to go.

I will bet $150 to win on #8 Jet Set Lass at 5/1 to 14/1 but just $100 at 15/1 or more. Also, I’ll take $200 to win on #1 Lanie’s Way at 2/1 to 7/2 only, and $200 on #7 A Taco Short at 3/1 and up. If the Harris Farm money shows up knocking #9 Play Reveille to 2/1 to 7/2, then I will take $200 on her while canceling the bets on Lanie’s Way and A Taco Short.

Finally, I’ll wager $150 to win on first timer #4 Serena’s Echo at 10/1 to 19/1 only.

Winner #12 Jilona was trained by Beau Greely and bred by the owner John Greely, Beau's father.

In November and December, #12 Jilona ran in two maiden special weight sprints for 2-year-olds where she was able to keep up with the early leaders for a half a mile.

In those races, Jilona showed that she had a superior quarter mile burst of speed to any of the runners going in this $32,000 maiden claimer. On Sunday, Jilona broke sharply then settled a few lengths off of leader #6 Betterthanfiction.

Coming into the stretch, Chantal Sutherland’s three-length lead on Betterthanfiction had dwindled to one, and Jilona was coming hard with a four-wide move. Jilona took over with an eighth of a mile to the wire and held off #4 She’s All Rev’d Up.

For betting purposes, I was waiting for 3-to-1 on Jilona, but she ended up going off at 5-to-2. I had four horses that I was considering, but only one of them went off in my odds range. So, I ended up with $100 on #13 Stormy Runaway at 31-to-1 based on her huge middle move in her last race.

Jockey Garrett Gomez went wire-to-wire on #9 Belongs to Gotham

Jockey Garrett Gomez wins again, but pays just $4.40

The betting public seemed to be only interested in two horses. They made both #6 One Vote and #9 Belongs to Gotham 6-to-5, while the only other horse less than 10-to-1 was #4 De Brief Me.

Belongs to Gotham sped to a quick lead and dueled with 96-to-1 shot #7 Rockin the City on the backstretch. The difference was that jockey Joy Scott was hustling Rockin the City, but Belongs to Gotham was running  without being asked. By the time they hit the top of the stretch, Rockin the City had enough, but One Vote was making a move on the leader.

It looked like a dramatic two-horse duel was materializing, but Gomez can really shake a horse up in the stretch and he was all over this one. Belongs to Gotham pulled away to win, minus any drama.

I planned to wager on One Vote, but not at less than 2/1 and another one I liked — #8 Jimmy Two Times — was scratched was scratched. Two others were out of my odds zone, so the only bet I made was $150 to win on #3 Panda at 15/1.

#4 De Brief Me                                         8/1
#6 One Vote                                            9/5
#8 Jimmy Two Times                            5/1

The median Beyer Speed Figure for this type of race is 71 and two runners in here have recently earned a 70: #6 One Vote and #9 Belongs to Gotham.

I give One Vote the edge out of these two because this gelding appears to have better speed, but it’s probably a moot point because both will likely  be bet below 2-to-1.

That leads us to first timer #8 Jimmy Two Times who has a few good workouts on display. I especially like the 59-1/5 second 5 furlongs he worked on Dec. 20, which was the sixth fastest of 104 horses who exercised at that distance.

The connections are also a positive for Jimmy Two Times, as both jockey Mike Smith and trainer Bill Spawr win at decent 16 percent rate. However, the last 24 times Smith rode for Spawr the percentage spiked to 29 percent, as they won seven races together.

Other first times who may be worth a wager if the price is right are #3 Panda, #4 De Brief Me and #5 You’re No Good.

I will bet $300 on #6 One Vote at 2/1 and up and $250 on #8 Jimmy Two Times at 7/2 to 19/1.

Also, I want $150 to win on any of these horses that fall between the odds of 10/1 to 19/1: #3 Panda, #4 De Brief Me and #5 You’re No Good.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano seemed to punch the accelerator at the last minute to get #1 Mr. Holmes up.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano punched the accelerator at the last minute to get #1 Mr. Holmes up.

Really in the late stages of this race, it was Zephaniah’s to lose. But the 11-to-1 shot just couldn’t last.

Zephaniah, who stalked the pace of #6 Dial Four Peace  on the backstretch, began making his move on the turn when  jockey Martin Garcia went to the whip. He took the lead in midstretch and it didn’t look like any of his rivals were making a move.

Even race caller Trevor Denman thought 7-to-5 shot Mr. Holmes was all done. With an eighth of a mile to the wire, Denman gave him a monotoned midstretch courtesy call “Mr. Holmes plugging away from fourth,” while the horse was going nowhere, four lengths behind.

But just about then, #1 Mr Holmes kicked in with a burst of speed and won in the last jump.

I planned to bet Mr. Holmes at 2-to-1 or better, so his odds were too low for me. I ended up with $100 on both #3 Zephaniah and 7-to-1 shot #9 Mustang Aleyna.

Trainer Mike Harrington lit up the board with 30/1 first timer #2 Shock the Board

Trainer Mike Harrington lit up the tote with 30/1 first timer #2 Shock the Board

In horse racing, winning is so sweet because there are so many ways to lose a race.

And some beats sting a lot more than others.

The laws of probabilities seem to be stacked against  horseplayers in any one race, even if they choose the right contenders and only bet them at good prices.

Of course, it’s easy to shrug off winning horses that are tossed out as non-contenders — whether they are favorites or long shots — because they are going to win their share of races.

You can easily rationalilze those because they don’t win enough at prices that make them profitable in the long run.

But the real pain starts when the odds on a horse you really like dip below your betting zone, so you lay off. Then you sit there and watch it win, while gritting your teeth as others celebrate around you.

You can rationalize those, too, easily enough by looking at the measly prices of $5.60 or $4.80 on the tote board.

But, to me, the biggest punch in the stomach in racing is when the odds on a runner you picked are sitting perfectly in your betting zone, then drift too high at the last minute. You can’t bet, and when the horse wins it’s really a killer.

Which brings us to Monday’s sixth race, where the odds on first-time starter #2 Shock the Board were fluctuating between 16-to-1 to 18-to-1 for all of the pre-race period. I was fully prepared to bet it at anything less than 20-to-1.

But with two minutes to post, the odds on Shock the Board went to 23-to-1.

Mike Harrington trained it, owned it and worked it two bullets. And he did one more thing right with Shock the Board — after seeing the $62.40 price the horse paid, it was obvious that he gave the animal the right name.

I also bet $350 on the Mike Mitchell-trained #3 Morton Owen at 7-to-2, $100 on #4 Gretsky, who was second.

Trainer Craig Dollase broke an 0-for-31 streak when #8 Roll Model won

On the inside, #1 Brent’s Passion looked like she lasted against #8 Roll Model at the wire, but really it was too close to call.

And Roll Model’s trainer Craig Dollase needed this photo badly. Very badly.

Dollase, who at 27 years old in 1998 saddled Reraise to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, had lost his first 31 starts at Santa Anita this year. So it must have been quite a relief for Dollase when the placing judges posted 3-to-1 shot Roll Model first.

Ridden by Jesus Rios, Roll Model stalked the pace, but she couldn’t get by stubborn pace setter Brent’s Passion in the stretch until the very last moment.

I bet $250 on #2 Play Reveille, who showed early speed, and #7 Track Majesty, who finished third after coming off a six-month layoff.

see-full-size-imageTrainer Jerry Hollendorfer was also part owner of #6 The Major, who won this race as a first-time starter showing  decent work outs.

As expected, #8 Eddie the Hat went directly to the lead, but swerved to the right so severely at the break that he couldn’t be seen on the head-on replay for about five seconds. Jockey Tyler Baze straighted out “The Hat” and he led down the backstretch and to the top of the stretch. But he stopped quickly in midstretch as The Major, ridden by Patrick Husbands, eased to the lead and held off a mild late rally by #4 Only Be Cause.

Trainer Robert Hess, Jr. had filly Rev Her Up rarin' to go

Garrett Gomez is good, but he’s not that good.

Horseplayers, however, continue to bet Gomez in maiden sprints like they’ve already read tomorrow’s paper. These days, any contender Gomez rides — like Delahoosee on Thursday and #8 Dixie Lucky on Friday — is likely to be pounded to less than 3-ro-2. And these horse don’t look much better than the other nags.

For example on Jan. 2, #9 Sky Marni finished just 1-3/4 lengths behind Dixie Lucky when they competed together — and Sky Marni was steadied two times in the stretch. Yet, Sky Marni went off at 9-to-2 in Friday’s eighth, while Dixie Lucky was bet to 7-to-5.  The payout was almost four times greater for Sky Marni, and did Dixie Lucky have a four times better chance of winning because Gomez was riding?

I think not.

Even #4 Rev Her Up, the horse who won Friday’s race, ran a 66 Beyer Speed Figure in her last. And that compares favorably to the 64 that Dixie Lucky ran in her only start.

Anyway in this race, Dixie Lucky finished a well-beaten fifth and was never anywhere close to the front, while Rev Her Up and Sky Marni finished 1-2.

Iwagered $200 on #1 Count’n Tears a 7-to-1 second timer, $150 on Sky Marni, and $200 on #2 Tripped Fuse, a 19-to-1 shot making her debut.

#5 Molly Moonshine                            20/1

#8 Dixie Lucky                                   2/1
#9 Sky Martini                                   8/1

This looks like a very strong race for the level, as the median Beyer Speed Figure is 66 and many of these horses have run races in the mid-60’s.

However, there are also many first and second-time starters with potential in here and they always seem to pay better than a horse with a high Beyer number.

On the rail, #1 Count’n Tears is running in her second lifetime race and she looks like the quickest horse. That’s important with a short run to the turn. Another second-timer who could run big is #9 Sky Marni, who steadied in the stretch on Jan. 2, yet still ran a 59 Beyer.

Garrett Gomez is certain to depress the price on 2-to-1 morning line favorite #8 Dixie Lucky, but #7 Hypnotizing, who is another second-timer, will probably go off at a decent wagering price.

Peter Eurton, who’s won with six of his last 13, trains #5 Moonshine Molly, but she has all slow workouts showing for her debut. Another running for the first time is #2 Tripped Fuse, who is worth a wager if the price is right.

I will bet $200 to win on #1 Count’n Tears, and $150 on #7 Hypnotizing and #9 Sky Marni — all at 3/1 to 7/1 only, and I will reduce the wagers on all three to $100 at odds of 8/1 or more. Also, I want $200 on #2 Tripped Fuse and #5 Molly Moonshine, but only at 10/1 to 19/1.

Jockey Michael Baze sped to the lead with #9 Betty boomboom

If you see trainer Peter Eurton at Santa Anita, don’t bump into him because you might burn yourself.

He is that hot right now.

In 2008, trainer Peter Eurton ran 124 horses and won 19 races for a respectable winning percentage of 15.  But during the Santa Anita meeting, which began Dec. 26, Eurton’s horses have won six of their 13 races, or 46 percent of the time.

On Jan. 15, Eurton saddled 7-to-1 shot Dish the Dirt to a maiden win and Thursday #9 Bettyboomboom went wire-to-wire at 9-to-2. As Bettyboomboom was loading into the gate, her odds were 6-to-1, but they plummeted to 9-to-2 as the race was being run. The same thing happened to Dish the Dirt, which tells me that the stable bets at the last possible moment.

Although I acknowledged Bettyboomboom’s speed when evaluating this race, I instead went for first-time starters #6 Excessive Charm at 6-to-1 and 18-to-1 shot #3 Play Reveille.

Former jockey Eddie Delahoussaye is now an owner and breeder

When Eddie Delahoussaye was riding, he typically broke horses in the middle of the pack and saved an exciting burst of speed for the stretch. But his namesake horse #2 Delahoosee, which he owns and bred, came up empty Thursday in his stretch run against #8 Santamonicacanyon.

As the even-money favorite, Delahoosee broke well to track Santamonicacanyon down the backstretch. At the eighth pole, Delahoosee ran right up next to the leader and, with a vigorous ride by Garrett Gomez, he seemed sure to hit the wire first.

But Santamonicacanyon was game and pulled away to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

I considered betting Delahoosee, #4 Dapper Gene and #3 Gretsky, but their odds were all out of my range. I ended up with $300 on #7 Cat’s Causeway, who made no impact in his debut at 8-to-1
