Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 6 furlongs, 4 yo’s and up

Possible overlays                         Morning line

#3 All About Larry                             6/1
#4 Senor Afortunado                         8/1
#5 Olympic Force                             15/1
#9 Thornmark                                   2/1
#10 Go Cory Go                                 4/1
#11 Hold This                                   12/1

Several of these horses have the ability to win at this level. But if #9 Thornmark goes off at 2/1 or more then I will play him. Thornmark ran an 87 Beyer Speed Figure the only time he raced, which was almost a year ago — so he definitely fits. Also, trainer David Bernstein won at 19 percent last year, so he seems to know what he’s doing.

Others who were recently laid off that might run big include #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado, #10 Go Cory Go and #11 Hold This.

I’ll bet $300 to win on #9 Thornmark at 2/1 to 7/2.

But if Thornmark is 9-to-5 or lower, then instead I’ll take $200 to win on #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado and #10 Go Cory Go, but only if their post time odds are 2/1 to 7/2.

Also, I’m betting $150 on #11 Hold This at 2/1 to 9/1 regardless of Thornmark’s price.

Results, Santa Anita Friday Race 8 — lost $300

Trainer Mike Puype's horses are firing well off layoffs right now

Trainer Mike Puype's second timers are firing well off layoffs right now

Recently trainer Mike Puype’s been doing an outstanding job with second-time starters coming back from long layoffs. On Wednesday, Mossad won the fifth race for him, paying $12, and Puype took the first race Friday with second-time starter Ciccina. The 5-to-2 shot hadn’t raced since May 11.

In the eighth, #7 Kafwain’s Belle fit the same profile — a second-time starter trained by Puype coming off a long layoff. And as it was rallying up the rail to grab the money at 5-to-1, it dawned on me that a trend may be developing here. Now, I just hope it’s not too late to join the party.

Although, Kafwain’s Belle was bet to 4-to-1 early, I planned to put $200 on her only if she was 2/1 to 7/2 at post time. I also had tight betting ranges for $200 bets on #3 Silent Western — who was bet too low — #10 Eleni Mou and #12 Sally Says So, whose odds were too high.

Anyway, I ended up playing $100 on #11 Ata Honour, at 7-to-1, #12 Sally Says So, 26-to-1, and 7-to-1 shot #13 Saint’s Crown. Sally Says So made a nice run for second while never threatening the winner.

Trainer Barry Abrams got Unusual Heat gelding #1 Too Much Heat to win his second lifetime start, but paid just $5.40

In a race where it was difficult for me to find potentially profitable angles, the Barry Abrams-trained #1 Too Much Heat got the early lead and seemed to get stronger as the race got longer.

His only real challenge came from #4 Jacob’s Little Bro who broke slowly, but made a sharp middle move up the rail. Jacob’s Little Bro came within a neck of the lead on the turn, then faded.

Had he been 10/1, I would have bet Jacob’s Little Bro, but his post-time odds were just 5/1 so I didn’t wager at all.

Abrams is a cancer survivor and partly attributes his success battling the disease to the hope of watching babies run from his sire Unusual Heat.

Workout analyst Bruno De Julio is part owner of #4 Shantika's Dream, who won her debut at 17/1.

Bubbley Blonde, #2,  was just too irresistible for bettors. She showed several fast workouts and had leading jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard, so the crowd hammered her to 9/5 even though she had never raced before this.

She ran admirably, leading until the top of the stretch, but #4 Shantika’s Dream stalked the pace and drew off in the stretch. Winning trainer Adam Kitchingman worked Shantika’s Dream slowly leading up to the race, which he usually does with his debuters. And he was able to get 17/1 with low-profile jockey Chantal Sutherland riding.

Workout analyst Bruno De Julio is part owner of Shantika’s Dream and this was the second time in five starts that one of the horses he owned won when running for the first time.

I ended up playing $200 on #5 Malibu Artiste, who showed speed in her last, but in this race unsuccessfully tried to rate from just off the lead.
