Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 6-1/2 furlongs, 4-yo’s and up, f&m

Possible overlays                              Morning line

#3 Raise Again                                          4/1
#4 Secret Potion                                       5/2
#6 Connie the Queen                                 4/1
#7 Black Point                                          15/1
#8 Natpolean                                            3/1

Coming off a recent long layoff has been a great money-making move for trainer Rafael Becerra in this type of race. In 2008, he did it three times: the first, on March 14 paying $23.60,  then on April 24 at $10, and the third time on Oct. 3 paying $15 . In 2007, it was Becerra again with the same move on Jan. 24 paying $19.20 and on Aug. 30 at $19.80.

Today, he has #3 Raise Again who ran OK at the level in Spring 2007 and can run the 65-70 Beyer Speed Figure necessary to win. Breaking beside her will be #4 Secret Potion, who ran a 57 Beyer in her debut for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer before he shipped her south from Golden Gate Fields.

Connie the Queen, #6, is another off a long layoff. She last ran July 16 in a Suffolk Downs turf race at 1-mile and 70 yards. In addition to traveling to lowly Suffolk, this mare’s seven races included stops at Aqueduct, Belmont, Saratoga, the Meadowlands and Finger Lakes.

If she gets bet, I will like her more.

It seemed to me that jockey Victor Espinoza steadied #8 Natpolean at the break during her first race on Nov. 29. She trailed for most of the way, but got more involved the next time she ran on Dec. 20. Her trainer Patrick Gallagher does better, I believe, with horses that have had at least two starts.

I will bet $300 on #3 Raise Again at 2/1 to 7/2, but only $200 if she drifts to 4/1 or higher.

Also, if #3 Connie the Queen is 2/1 to 7/2, then I’ll bet $100 to win on her, and I’ll put $150 on #4 Secret Potion at 3/1 to 7/1 only.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $50,000, 6 furlongs, 3 year olds

Possible overlays                   Morning line

#1 Eddie the Hat                               3/1
#2 Cracked Code                              10/1
#6 Hammurabi                                  4/1

The obvious horse in here is #4 Uncle Jeep, but the odds on this one are almost certain to be minuscule. Uncle Jeep was the beaten favorite in his last three races, he is ridden by money magnet Garrett Gomez and Mike Mitchell is by far the most accomplished and recognized trainer of the six in here.

Uncle Jeep’s morning line is 4-to-5 and even if he goes off at even money, he would only be a good bet if you thought Uncle Jeep had 65-to-70 percent chance of victory. That’s a difficult argument to make, considering this horse so far has lost five sprint races at this class level.

His previous jockey Victor Espinoza jumps to #3 Khurt Harry, and I don’t like him either because he raced greenly in his initial race on Dec 27. On that day, Khurt Harry broke slowly, remained in last on the turn and zig-zagged through the stretch while never showing anything.

However, second-timers #1 Eddie the Hat and #6 Hammurabi both ran OK in their debuts, posting Beyer Speed Figures of greater than 50. Richard Matlow, the trainer of Hammurabi, has been winning at 30 percent second time out for two years now, while Eddie the Hat flashed speed in a turf sprint and has four good workouts on his ledger.

Finally, debuter #2 Cracked Code has a shot, as the owners De Renzo & Hartly won with their only first timer. That horse was trained by Jeff Mullins and it paid $10.40 on Aug. 8.

I will bet $200 on both #1 Eddie the Hat and #6 Hammurabi at odds of 5/2 or more. Also, at 6/1 to 19/1, I’ll take a $150 shot to win on #2 Cracked Code.

Waddup G won easily for trainer Doug O'Neill after dropping in class and cutting back to a sprint

Waddup G won easily for trainer Doug O'Neill after dropping in class and cutting back to a sprint

This horse seemed to be moving like a tremendous machine.

Waddup G obviously stood out in this 12-horse field as she eased to the lead while four-wide on the turn and pulled away to win by 6-1/4 official lengths.

The Doug O’Neill trainee was dropping into this low level claiming sprint from maiden special weight where she showed speed in three routes. Although she never got close to winning those races, she still ran the two best Beyer Speed Figures of this group.

Sure, sometimes they don’t reproduce the Beyers, but this time the class showed.

I was prepared to wager $150 on #12 Waddup G at 2-to-1, but she went into the gate at 9-to-5 and stayed there. Others I was watching included second timer #13 Shawnie Ora and #5 Tan Tan, a first-timer. But their prices drifted out of my odds ranges, so I couldn’t bet them either.

It is said that trainer Julio Canani likes to heavily bet his horses, so they usually offer little value

It is said that trainer Julio Canani likes to heavily bet his horses, so they usually offer little value

I never seem to be on a Julio Canani-trained horse when they win because they’re always bet too low. From what I hear, it’s because this trainer is a huge Southern California bettor.

However, wagering against Canani has been profitable in the past because, when he brings a suitcase full of money to the window, it boosts the odds on the other horses. And his ponies lose quite often.

But on Sunday, the Canani-trained #5 Miss Silver Brook made her first start a winning one. The gray filly laid off the pace early, then jockey Alex Solis rallied her on the outside where she mowed down #8 Ride Me Fast and #1 Storm the Church in the stretch.

But she paid a paltry $6.80, which is a price that doesn’t come close to covering the risks associated with a horse running in its first lifetime start. Even Secretariat lost the first time he ran.

But enough history. Back to this race: Trainer Jeff Mullins had two fillies going  — the 9-to-5 shot #6 No Saint But Sweet and #1 Storm the Church at 10-to-1. And the longer- odds horse ran better. I bet $150 on Storm the Church, a debuter, who broke slowly but came on strong with a run four-paths wide on the turn. She held the lead at the top of the stretch before fading to third.

Jockey Garrett Gomez was stuck behind a wall of horses at the eighth pole while riding #2 White Lamb, who I also bet $150 on at 9-to-2. This horse looked like he wanted to make a run, as race caller Trevor Denman commented, “White Lamb needs somewhere to go,” at the eighth pole —  and with a sixteenth of a mile to run  “White Lamb desperate to get through.”

But Gomez couldn’t find any room.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $32,000, 6-1/2 furlongs, 3-year-old fillies

Possible overlays                              Morning line

#5 Tan Tan                                               20/1
#12 Waddup G                                           5/2
#13 Shawnie Ora                                       12/1

I probably won’t end up playing anything in here.

I got a late start handicapping this one and I am looking at the tote board now. With 15 minutes to post, the favorite #12 Waddup G is 8/5. I like her because she ran a 63 Beyer Speed Figure in a route race, which is just below the median needed to win this race. But I wouldn’t bet her unless she’s at least 2/1.

Second-time starter #13 Shawnie Ora is 7-to-1 on the tote board now, but I’m only interested at 2/1 to 9/2. Also, #5 Tan Tan is an OK bet at 10/1 to 19/1, but she’s 21-to-1.

I’m noticing surprise betting action on #3 It’s Partytime, who is 10-to-1 on the morning line, but the tote board says 7-to-2. She has good early speed, which is much more valuable in shorter sprints than 6-1/2 furlongs.

I will bet $150 on #12 Waddup G at 2/1 or higher, $150 on #13 Shawnie Ora at 2/1 to 9/2, and $100 on #5 Tan Tan at 10/1 to 19/1.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden Special Weight, 6 furlongs, 3-year-old fillies

Possible overlays                                   Morning line

#1 Storm the Church                               12/1
#2 White Lamb                                       9/2
#4 Guided Wave                                       8/1
#6 No Saint But Sweet                              5/2
#7 Black Magic Mama                                7/2
#8 Ride Me Fast                                       5/1

I wouldn’t be surprised to see any filly but #3 Shadow Queen win this race. So, I’ll use the tote board as a guide, make some good bets at decent odds, and everything should work out in the long run.

Coming off a six-month layoff, #2 White Lamb should be near the front of the pack at the quarter pole. On July 5 at Arlington Park, White Lamb was bet to 6-to-5 in a 10 horse field and she flashed early speed before fading, however jockey Rene Douglas merely breezed her from the eighth pole to the wire.

The median Beyer Speed Figure to win this race is an 80, and trainer Jeff Mullins runner #6 No Saint But Sweet earned a 79 Beyer in her Dec. 7 debut. She broke slowly and came running late that day. Mullins also sends out first-timer #1 Storm the Church, who will have no-name jockey Pedro Arambula aboard, and she has several good workouts that make her a good bet at the right price.

On New Year’s Day, Mullins won with a hidden entry horse named Jaylo’s Mark at 10-to-1. She was running for the second time while Mullins’ first-time starter Katie G. finished seventh at 11-to-1.

Also debuting in this race is #8 Ride Me Fast. Although owner Mike Pegram hasn’t historically done well with this type, if Ride Me Fast gets some betting action then she’ll fit the profile of winning Bob Baffert first timers.

Finally, #4 Guided Wave broke slowly in her first race before making a decent run and she could wake up. And trainer Doug O’Neill must think highly of #7 Black Magic Mama because she ran in both the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies and the Hollywood Starlet. Today, she cuts back to a sprint, but I’d like her more if they were going 6-1/2 or 7 furlongs.

I will bet $200 on #8 Ride Me Fast from 7/2 to 9/1, but just $100 if her post time odds drift up to between 10/1 and 19/1. I want $150 on #1 Storm the Church at 7/2 to 19/1 and $150 on #2 White Lamb if her post time odds are 2/1 to 6/1.

If White Lamb’s odds fall out of the betting zone — either too high or too low — then I’ll  put $150 on #6 No Saint But Sweet at 2/1 or higher.

Note: I also plan to bet the ninth race today, which goes off at 4:38 p.m., but won’t be able to post it until 3:30.

Jockey Michael Baze gunned #13 Outlaw Yodler from the gate and never looked back

The betting was frosty on #9 Thornmark, who was 2-to-1 on the morning line but opened up at 9-to-2. The five-year-old gelding, who was running for the second time after an 11-month layoff , finally closed at 5-to-2.

But when the gates open, Thornmark never made an impact as #13 Outlaw Yodler shot straight for the lead and dominated the race. Jockey Joe Talamo got #11 Hold This up for second at 7-to-1, while #10 Go Cory Go was off the board after being well backed at 3/1.

Outlaw Yodler had showed decent speed in his five previous tries, but always faded in the stretch. Today, trainer Peter Eurton removed the blinkers, which may have helped the 4-year-old relax.

In the end, I bet $300 on Thornmark and another $150 on Hold This.

#10 Go Cory Go                                 4/1
#11 Hold This                                   12/1

Several of these horses have the ability to win at this level. But if #9 Thornmark goes off at 2/1 or more then I will play him. Thornmark ran an 87 Beyer Speed Figure the only time he raced, which was almost a year ago — so he definitely fits. Also, trainer David Bernstein won at 19 percent last year, so he seems to know what he’s doing.

Others who were recently laid off that might run big include #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado, #10 Go Cory Go and #11 Hold This.

I’ll bet $300 to win on #9 Thornmark at 2/1 to 7/2.

But if Thornmark is 9-to-5 or lower, then instead I’ll take $200 to win on #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado and #10 Go Cory Go, but only if their post time odds are 2/1 to 7/2.

Also, I’m betting $150 on #11 Hold This at 2/1 to 9/1 regardless of Thornmark’s price.

Trainer Mike Puype's horses are firing well off layoffs right now

Trainer Mike Puype's second timers are firing well off layoffs right now

Recently trainer Mike Puype’s been doing an outstanding job with second-time starters coming back from long layoffs. On Wednesday, Mossad won the fifth race for him, paying $12, and Puype took the first race Friday with second-time starter Ciccina. The 5-to-2 shot hadn’t raced since May 11.

In the eighth, #7 Kafwain’s Belle fit the same profile — a second-time starter trained by Puype coming off a long layoff. And as it was rallying up the rail to grab the money at 5-to-1, it dawned on me that a trend may be developing here. Now, I just hope it’s not too late to join the party.

Although, Kafwain’s Belle was bet to 4-to-1 early, I planned to put $200 on her only if she was 2/1 to 7/2 at post time. I also had tight betting ranges for $200 bets on #3 Silent Western — who was bet too low — #10 Eleni Mou and #12 Sally Says So, whose odds were too high.

Anyway, I ended up playing $100 on #11 Ata Honour, at 7-to-1, #12 Sally Says So, 26-to-1, and 7-to-1 shot #13 Saint’s Crown. Sally Says So made a nice run for second while never threatening the winner.

Trainer Barry Abrams got Unusual Heat gelding #1 Too Much Heat to win his second lifetime start, but paid just $5.40

In a race where it was difficult for me to find potentially profitable angles, the Barry Abrams-trained #1 Too Much Heat got the early lead and seemed to get stronger as the race got longer.

His only real challenge came from #4 Jacob’s Little Bro who broke slowly, but made a sharp middle move up the rail. Jacob’s Little Bro came within a neck of the lead on the turn, then faded.

Had he been 10/1, I would have bet Jacob’s Little Bro, but his post-time odds were just 5/1 so I didn’t wager at all.

Abrams is a cancer survivor and partly attributes his success battling the disease to the hope of watching babies run from his sire Unusual Heat.

Workout analyst Bruno De Julio is part owner of #4 Shantika's Dream, who won her debut at 17/1.

Bubbley Blonde, #2,  was just too irresistible for bettors. She showed several fast workouts and had leading jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard, so the crowd hammered her to 9/5 even though she had never raced before this.

She ran admirably, leading until the top of the stretch, but #4 Shantika’s Dream stalked the pace and drew off in the stretch. Winning trainer Adam Kitchingman worked Shantika’s Dream slowly leading up to the race, which he usually does with his debuters. And he was able to get 17/1 with low-profile jockey Chantal Sutherland riding.

Workout analyst Bruno De Julio is part owner of Shantika’s Dream and this was the second time in five starts that one of the horses he owned won when running for the first time.

I ended up playing $200 on #5 Malibu Artiste, who showed speed in her last, but in this race unsuccessfully tried to rate from just off the lead.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 5-1/2 furlongs, 4-yo’s and up

Possible overlays                              Morning line

#3 Silent Western                                  7/2
#7 Kafwain’s Belle                                  8/1
#10 Eleni Mou                                       20/1
#11 Ata Honour                                      8/1
#12 Sally Says So                                 12/1
#13 Saint’s Crown                                  5/1

I’ll be watching the tote board for clues. If there’s heavy betting on any of three horses coming off layoffs — #7 Kafwain’s Belle, #10 Eleni Mou or #12 Sally Says So — then I’m climbing on board, too.

I believe jockey Jon Court on #13 Saints Crown will try for the lead as this mare wasn’t rating well last time, but a wide trip may be that horse’s downfall. And Eleni Mou has better speed than what appears in her past performance lines so I expect her to be right up front, too.

Silent Western, #3, ran a winning race on Dec. 7 as her 70 Beyer Speed Figure is the median needed to win this type of race. Flew First Class ran her down that day, but Silent Western was 2-1/2 lengths clear of third place and she defeated nine other horses.

I will bet $200 on #7 Kafwain’s Belle, #10 Eleni Mou or #12 Sally Says So at 2/1 to 7/2 only. If #3 Silent Western is 3/1 to 9/2 then I’ll bet $200 on her.

Also, I will bet $100 on any of these scenarios — #3 Silent Western and #11 Ata Honour at 5/1 or more; #12 Sally Says So at 7/1 and above, and #13 Saint’s Crown at 6/1 or better.

#4 Jacob’s Little Bro                                  10/1

Seven colts are running for the first time in this eight-horse field of California breds.

Debuters from the powerful Harris Farms stable tend to run well when bet below 10/1 and #6 Vaundell is the 5/2 morning line choice. Howard Zucker trains #2 Charlie and Chris, who has a couple of fast workouts. Blogger Mary Forney watched Charlie and Chris school in the paddock recently and was impressed with him.

I plan to stay out of this race for the most part. At the window, I will wager $150 on Jacob’s Little Bro at 10/1 to 19/1.

#2 Bubbley Blonde                            7/2
#5 Malibu Artiste                              5/2

Jockey Rafael Bejarano rides #2 Bubbley Blonde who shows lots of good workouts. But it seems that all of Kathy Walsh’s first timers work out well, get bet, then run poorly in their debuts.

But I still like the filly at 7/2 or higher.

Malibu Artiste, the #5 horse, seems to be the speed. She dueled three-wide on the turn Dec. 5 and hung in there for second. Trainer Paul Aguirre won with six of his last 17 second-time starters and Malibu Artiste has shown some life in morning workouts.

I will bet $150 on #2 Bubbley Blonde at 7/2 to 19/1 and $200 on Malibu Artiste at 2/1 or higher. However, I expect the public to bet one of these two below the odds range, so I’ll likely end up with only one wager.

Results, Santa Anita Thursday Race 8 — won $1,490

imgres14With #9 Good Newsman scratched, the public made #4 Bubsy the 9-to-5 favorite, but that horse had weak Beyer Speed Figures for the level.

At 5-to-1, the Patrick Gallagher-trained #2 Cold Ruler took the lead on the backstretch, while jockey Rafael Bejarano patiently sat a few lengths off the pace, riding 6-to-1 shot #7 Haughty Topper. Bejarano passed Cold Ruler in the stretch, but he couldn’t go with Clinton Potts aboard #3 African Gray, who made a 3-wide move on the turn and found another gear in midstretch to win clear. African Gray, a debuter who began his training at another circuit, paid $27.20 for trainer Ted West.

I bet $150 on the African Gray, but also had $300 on Haughty Topper and $100 on Cold Ruler. I was eyeing #10 At the Beach also, but his odds drifted above my maximum 14-to-1 for him.

Results, Santa Anita Thursday Race 4 — lost $200

Jockey Jordan Springer, who was based in Tampa, got her first Santa Anita winner Thursday on #8 Tavern

Jockey Jordan Springer, who was based in Tampa, got her first Santa Anita winner Thursday on #8 Tavern

The favorite #4 White Lace Jimmy was hammered to the unbettable price of 3/2, but he almost got there with a late burst that brought him to within a neck of the winning horse.

But first-time starter #8 Tavern, at 24-to-1, held off White Lace Jimmy to give female jockey Jordan Springer, 31,  her first victory at Santa Anita. Springer began riding at Churchill Downs in 2004 and booted home her first winner at Tampa Bay Downs in January 2005.

I bet $200 on another debuter in the race #5 Llamada Perdida who went off at 16-to-1. But I heard this horse’s name called only one time throughout the race. As track announcer Trevor Denman was rattling off horses on the backstretch, he commented “and last by a long, long way is Llamada Perdida.”

I guess that’s why people don’t like betting first timers because you can be out of the race quickly, without ever getting a run for your money.
