ShowVivor II starts Wednesday on Santa Anita’s website

showvivorSanta Anita Park is begining another ShowVivor contest Wednesday.

ShowVivor II is an online competition where horseplayers select one horse a day that absolutely, positively is a lock to hit the board. Then they sit back and hope the jockey doesn’t fall off, the horse doesn’t go wide, or their runner doesn’t fade fast in the stretch after dueling too quickly for the lead.

If the contestant’s horse avoids trouble and runs well enough to hit the board, the handicapper survives  showvives until the next racing day. The race player who lasts the longest wins $3,000 in cash and a deluxe weekend for two in a premier room at the Las Vegas Hilton. Air travel is included. Second prize is $1,500 and third place pays $500.

ShowVivor lasts until the end of the meet, April 19. To sign up go to the Santa Anita Park website.

Jockeys playing basketball? Fun to watch, bad to bet

Psst. Here’s a tip: Don’t bet on the Santa Anita jockeys basketball team.

Wagering on jockeys Joe Talamo, Cory Nakatani and Rafael Bejarano might be a good idea while these guys are holding a whip and a horse’s reins. But when they tie up their Nike Air Zooms and pick up a basketball, gamblers should keep their money in their pockets.

Oh sure, these riders are nice people and it’s fun to watch jockeys like Brice Blanc, David Flores and Kayla Stra scamper around the court. But why would a group of grown-ups who stand just over 5-feet tall and weigh 115 pounds spend much time honing their basketball skills?

They wouldn’t. And they don’t.

That much was evident Thursday at La Salle High School in Pasadena when the Santa Anita jockeys lost to a group of eighth graders from Holy Angels School in Arcadia 35-19.

It’s easy to see that these jockeys don’t play much ball by watching the one-minute You Tube video below of the game, which was shot by SA blogger Mary Forney.

We see Nakatani clanking a couple of free throws, the ref moving another mistaken jock off the key during the shots, and a Santa Anita field goal try that went bad after a sweet set-up move. I don’t know, maybe their coach TV’s Kurt Hoover was to blame.

But what I do know is that if this match was a horse race, it was as dominant a victory for the school kids as Smarty Jones’ 11-1/2 length win in the 2004 Preakness Stakes.

The riders might have lost, but as usual, the annual game seemed to be a hugely popular and entertaining event. The jockeys play the Holy Angels every year to raise money for the school’s athletic department.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden Claiming $32,000, 6 furlongs, 3-yo fillies

Possible overlays                   Morning line

#1 Tuaca Parfait                     12/1
#4 She’s All Rev’d Up               3/1
#5 Kentucky Nectar                 8/1
#6 Betterthanfiction                5/1
#7 Racing Rachel                     12/1
#8 Brahmzee                           8/1
#12 Jilona                               4/1
#13 Stormy Runaway               20/1

Here’s a little known fact about this race: In the Daily Racing Form it shows that Martin Garcia and Bob Baffert are 0-for-2 as a tandem from 2008-09. So it looks like Baffert never uses Garcia. But in 2006-07, Garcia rode 12 first time starters for Baffert and won with five of them at prices ranging from 9/2 to 9/1.

Garcia rides #8 Brahmzee in her debut today for Baffert.

Looking at the replays, I saw plenty of horses with hidden talent and am hoping one of them will put it all together today at a decent price. On the rail, #1 Tuaca Parfait was four wide on the turn while breathing down the neck of the leaders in her Feb. 5 debut. On that day, she was bet to 5/1, however she loses jockey Tyler Baze today to contender #12 Jilona. Tuaca Parfait has the speed to get the lead and never look back.

On the far outside, #13 Stormy Runaway broke slowly in her last then made a huge middle move to get within a half length of the leaders. She’s been working out well and seems to be improving, but the post position could create a wide trip.

Jockey Chantal Sutherland had #6 Betterthanfiction under a bit of a hold while on the turn Jan. 16, but once Sutherland hit the gas this filly took off. Betterthanfiction is improving, as seen by her last four race Beyer progression of 22-47-57-60.

Probably the best horse in the race is #12 Jilona who has the early speed to keep up with maiden special weight runners. She has already run a 66 Beyer Speed Figure, which is the median winning Beyer for this level.

Also, it would be no surprise to see #4 She’s All Rev’d Up cross the wire first but she’s an obvious contender. And the fact that Doug O’Neill trains #5 Kentucky Nectar is enough reason to give that one a long look.

Finally, I’ll bet #7 Racing Rachel if the price is right.

At 8/1 or more, I will bet $150 to win on #1 Tuaca Parfait, and $100 to win on #13 Stormy Runaway. Also, I’ll put $100 on first timers #7 Racing Rachel from 10/1 to 19/1 and #8 Brahmzee from 3/1 to 9/1.

Finally, if Jilona goes off at 3/1 or better, I will take $100 to win on her and $20 exactas with #8 Jilona over #1 Tuaca Parfait, #6 Betterthanfiction, #7 Racing Rachel, #8 Brahmzee and #13 Stormy Runaway.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden Special Weight, 5-1/2 furlongs, 3-year-olds

Possible overlays                       Morning line

#2 Monolingual                               4/1
#4 Great Legacy                            5/1
#5 Fabulous Forum                        12/1

The photo finish camera has not been friendly to #1 Turk, who lost his first two races by a nose. This Bob Baffert-trainee, which is also owned by the trainer, went off at 2-to-5 in his last two races and figures to be less than even money again today. Turk has run Beyer Speed Figures of 88, 86, and 86, so he looks solid here considering the median winning Beyer Speed Figure is an 87. Garrett Gomez takes over for Joel Rosario, who went very wide last time out.

To bet a horse like Turk, you must believe there is no chance he can lose. And, of course, there is always a chance that Turk will run like a turkey — or at least lose another photo because 5-1/2 furlongs is too short.

One colt that might beat him is #2 Monolingual, who is working out well and has Rafael Bejarano aboard. The owners, Ike and Dawn Thrash, have started two first timers over the last couple of years and both of them hit the board.

Another likely worth a bet is #4 Great Legacy. Trained by Eoin Harty, this colt is out of supersire Storm Cat, whose stud fee is $300,000.

Finally, if either Monolingual and Great Legacy don’t fall into the betting range then I will add #5 Fabulous Forum. This horse has been training down at San Luis Rey Downs with Peter Miller and Joel Rosario rides.

I will bet $250 to win on both #2 Monolingual and #4 Great Legacy at odds of 3/1 to 9/1 only. If the odds rise to 10/1 to 19/1 then my bet reduces to $100. Also, if the odds are less than 3/1 on either of them, then I will substitute for that horse a $100 win bet on #5 Fabulous Forum at 10/1 to 19/1.

MK limits handicapping to Saturday and Sunday during database maintenance

When William Benter was developing his multi-million dollar Hong Kong betting operation, it took him five man-years to organize the data base and create a winning handicapping model.

My system isn’t nearly as sophisicated as Benter’s. But, still, the downside of betting horses using a computer is that a large amount of information needs to be collected and analyzed, which takes up lots of time.

Sooner or later, when research falls behind the bankroll will so south too. So, for the next few weeks I will only handicap maiden races on Saturday and Sunday while I catch up on everthing that I’m tracking.

Star of TV’s “Jockeys” is MK’s most widely searched

Internet searchers seek “Chantal Sutherland nude”

Megan Fox is the most searched woman on Chickipedia

Megan Fox is the most searched woman on Chickipedia

Everyone, it seems, wants to see jockey Chantal Sutherland nude.

I know this because every weekend that the TV show “Jockeys” airs on Animal Planet, I get a surge of Internet traffic from people who type the entries “Chantal Sutherland” and “Chantal Sutherland nude” into Google or other search engines. Maiden King stories appear on search sites and Sutherland seekers get here by clicking on either a You Tube interview with Sutherland that appeared here, or a couple of MK posts telling of winning maidens that Sutherland rode.

It must be very disappointing when searchers seeking nudes arrive on Maiden King because in all cases, Sutherland is fully clothed.

Sorry dudes, no nudes.

I’ve only watched “Jockeys” the first night that it began on Feb. 6, but I am certain that the producers are focusing lots of attention on Sutherland, who was voted one of People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People.

Whatever angle they are taking, it must be working because readers are interested in Sutherland like no other jockey in Southern California. And, although she is riding a respectable 13 percent winners from her mounts, it can’t be because of her performance on the racetrack.

Of the 50 search terms listed on this site by WordPress — mostly names of trainers, jockeys, horses and racing personalities —  the second most frequently used term is “Chantal Sutherland nude.” Elisha Cuthbert, whose photo was used one slow day, is the most searched and the third most searched term is “Chantal Sutherland.” But together, Sutherland has more searches than Cuthbert.

Cuthbert, an actress, is the 34th most widely searched woman on Chickipedia for 2008, so she has a large following already.

All this information arrives from WordPress when you have one of these blogs. Wordpress compiles statistics that tell which posts were clicked on the most for the day, week, month, year and all time. Also, it tells which search engine readers used to find your blog, and what terms they typed to get there.

The only reason Maiden King comes up for people searching for “Chantal Sutherland nude” is because on the day a story ran about Sutherland riding a winner, the “SPORTSbyBROOKS” website on my sidebar had news tellling that girls would be nude in the 2009 Lingerie Bowl. So the search engine picked up the three words: Chantal+Sutherland+Nude.

Anyway, I just wanted to make it clear: Yes, we have pictures of  Chantal Sutherland, but just not nude ones.

This just isn’t that kind of a website.

Possible overlays                  Morning line

#1 Wharf Cat                               9/2
#7 Ribald                                     5/1
#8 Sangaree                                6/1
#10 Adebayor                            10/1

The key to playing this race is that #5 Holladay Road, a first-time starter, is the morning line favorite and I don’t think that he should be. Garrett Gomez is riding, but according to my records Gomez rode six older horse msw debuters over the last couple of years. Three of them were between 6-to-5 and 9-to-5 and three more were between 5-to-2 and 5-to-1. Only one of them won and it paid $5.60.

The median winning Beyer Speed Figure for these horses is an 85, so #1 Wharf Cat’s 86 BSF fits in well.  Coming off a layoff, #7 Ribald flashed brilliant early speed last summer at Hollywood and it’s now or never for #8 Sangaree — the half brother to Congaree.

Historically, Carla Gaines has done well with second timers. Rafael Bejarano rides #10 Adebayo, who must have talent because he was bet to 5-to-2 in his February 2008 debut.

I will bet $200 on #7 Ribald at 3/1 or more and $150 on #10 Adebayor at 6/1 or better. Finally, I will play the longer of these two horses that is less than 10/1: #1 Wharf Cat and #8 Sangaree.

Results, Santa Anita Saturday Race 8 — lost $600

Trainer Bob Baffert and Garrett Gomez combined on #4 Zensational, who paid $3.20.

Trainer Bob Baffert and Garrett Gomez combined on #4 Zensational, who paid $3.20.

No matter what bettors gave the most priority to when handicapping this race, they all landed on #4 Zensational.

For those who play trainers, Zensational had Bob Baffert. For people who follow jockeys, the rider was Garrett Gomez. Workouts? Six quick ones including three bullets. Breeding and confirmation? The owner bought Zensational for $700,000, so the genes are top notch. Speed? Had the lead in his debut.

Even  people who bet nothing but gray horses liked him, as he’s a roan.

Much like Big Brown in last year’s Belmont, this horse looked so good that he couldn’t be bet. Everyone at the track had him, everyone at the Indian casinos loved Zensational and I’m sure the money was pouring through the windows on him in Vegas.

He went off at 60 cents on the dollar, and at that rate Zensational — and horses like him — need to win seven of 10 races to make any money for their backers. If they win six — you lose. And in horse racing, too many things can go wrong to take that price.

Yes, Zensational couldn’t lose and he didn’t. His backers will tell you that they made a quick 60 percent profit in just over a minute, and not even Bernard Madoff promised anything close to that.

But just enjoy the feeling while it lasts folks, and please do me a favor and keep pounding those 3-to-5 shots. Next time, however, just remember that  funny things have been known to happen at the racetrack.

My plays in this race were $200 to win on these three horses: #1 Gold Schleiger at 5/1, #7 Off the Wall at 11/1 and #8 Party Hard at 8/1.

#7 Off the Wall                               8/1
#8 Party Hard                                 5/1
#10 Brian the Brave                       20/1

All 10 horses in this race are running for either the first or second time.

I am going to guess that Garrett Gomez will be over bet on #4 Zensational. Why? Because it seems that Garrett Gomez is always over bet no matter who he rides.

Also, Zensational has a marquee name trainer, Bob Baffert, the horse has nothing but great workouts showing, it was bought for $700,000, and it was pounded to 2-to-1 the first time it ran.

Therefore, it will probably be 9-to-5 or less, and if so, then I can’t use it.

However, second timers #1 Gold Schleiger and #8 Party Hard look like they can get the job done, as they ran well in their debuts and have good workouts. First timers #6 Arcodoro, #7 Off the Wall and #10 Brian the Brave could also light up the tote board.

I will bet $200 on #1 Gold Schleiger and #8 Party Hard at 5/2 to 9/1. Additionally, I’ll put $200 on these three horses at 10/1 to 19/1 only: #6 Arcodoro, #7 Off the Wall, and #10 Brian the Brave.

If the public crushes the Todd Pletcher-trained #9 Iron Fortitude which allows #4 Zensational to be 5/2 or better, then I will play $200 on Zensational with the longer odds of #1 Gold Schleiger and #8 Party Hard that are still less than 10/1. However, the potential bets on the first timers will remain intact.

#9 Golden Delight                           12/1
#10 Degreko                                 12/1
#11 High and Mighty                       8/1
#12 The Emerald King                    9/2

This race comes up extremely competitive, so watching the tote board for the proper odds is essential.

The first thing worth noting, is that #12 The Emerald King is the only horse in this race to ever be within a length of the lead at the first or second call in a race less than 7 furlongs. And that is highly unusual in a 5-1/2 furlong maiden claiming race with 12 horses in the field.

However, four of the starters in here have only run one time, so they may show more speed today. Trainer Jack Carava claimed #3 I Am Madison’s out of his Jan. 9 debut at Golden Gate where the horse was 4-wide on the turn, but still gained on the leader. I Am Madison’s earned a 57 Beyer Speed Figure after tiring, and will almost certainly need at least a 71 to beat this competitive field.

Coming back from a six-month layoff, #11 High and Mighty is tied for the best last race Beyer with the 73 he ran against maiden special weights on Aug. 23. Besides the second timers, another that may have hidden ability is #10 Degreko, who is dropping into claiming off three turf races where he faced the best maidens on the grounds.

The morning-line favorite #4 Elusive Chief looks like he’ll be a good bet today. In his last race on Jan. 16, Elusive Chief went 4-wide on the turn and still ran a 73 Beyer. The problem is, he may need to go wide again.

I’ll bet $300 on #4 Elusive Chief if he’s 2/1 to 7/2 only and $200 on The #12 Emerald King at 3/1 or more.

Also, if any of these horses are between 5/2 and 9/1 then I’ll bet the following amounts on them: $250 on #11 High and Mighty, $200 on #3 I Am Madison’s, $150 on #8 Sky Ruler, and $100 on #9 Golden Delight.

#2 Marcade                                         9/2
#3 Zephaniah                                      12/1
#9 Mustang Aleyna                             12/1

Breaking from the rail, #1 Mr. Holmes looks strong today. On Dec. 14, this colt ran a credible fourth behind The Pamplemousse, who won the San Rafael Stakes impressively on Jan. 17. In Mr. Holmes’ last on Jan. 1, it seems like jockey Michael Baze was not trying too hard, as he merely breezed Mr. Holmes throughout the length of the stretch. Finally, trainer Jeff Mullins won with 10 of his last 43, producing $1.72 for every $1 bet, when going from a route to a sprint.

Trainer John Sadler appears to have #2 Marcade ready to run. Jockey Mike Smith rides many of owner Jerome Moss’ first time starters, but he hasn’t had much success with them.

Jerry Hollendorfer claimed #3 Zephaniah for $40,000 from trainer Ed Moger on Aug. 21, then Moger claimed him right back on Sept. 25 for the same price.  On Oct. 17, Zephaniah raced well enough to beat a weak field at this level, so he’s also a threat today.

Finally, #9 Mustang Aleyna could surprise at a big price as this gelding is coming off a long layoff and could be a live longshot. Although, his workouts are slow.

I will bet $300 on #1 Mr. Holmes at 2/1 or more, and $200 on #2 Marcade between 10/1 to 19/1. Also, I’ll take $100 on both #3 Zephaniah and #9 Mustang Aleyna at odds of 5/1 and up.

#5 Ben’s Bullet                                        15/1

Trainer Mike Mitchell, who saddles #3 Morton Owen, must always be respected in a maiden claiming race. Morton Owen was previously trained by David Carroll and he rallied nicely to finish second on Dec. 7 at the Fair Grounds.

Mitchell won with 23 of his last 76, or 30 percent, when taking over the training from someone else.

Trainer Neil Drysdale and jockey Joel Rosario hook up on #4 Gretsky who never works out fast, but ran a 77 Beyer Speed Figure in his Jan. 22 debut. I’d like to see at least one fast workout, but he could win regardless.

First time starters #2 Shock the Board and #5 Ben’s Bullet could be good bets if the price is right. While the owner of #6 BradytoMoss said his horse is a long-legged colt that should fit better in a route race. However, that same owner told me that he likes his other horse, #3 Prince Andrew in today’s third.

I will bet $350 to win on #3 Morton Owen at 9/5 or higher, and $200 on #2 Shock the Board at 3/1 to 12/1, but only $100 from 13/1 to 19/1.

Also, I’ll take $100 to win on #5 Ben’s Bullet at 7/2 to 19/1, and $100 on #4 Gretsky at 9/2 or more.

Did jockey David Flores cost I Can Hear the race?

Did jockey David Flores cost I Can Hear the race?

Entering the stretch, #7 I Can Hear appeared to be in an excellent outside rallying position. But for some reason, jockey David Flores ducked this debuter to the inside where she sat between the weakening #6 Irish Pepper and #3 Gifted Gina. They were all trying to catch #4 High Note, who was 2-1/2 lengths ahead.

I Can Hear kicked in with a late burst and almost got the money up the inside, missing by a half a length.

But it just seems to me that Flores made a mistake by not rallying on the outside, because I think I Can Hear would have been better able to concentrate on running hard if she wasn’t surrounded by other horses.

My wagers were $250 on I Can Hear at 7-to-2 and $100 on #2 Bell Canyon Road at 13-to-1.

#7 I Can Hear                                  5/1
#9 Champagneforchelle                  20/1

Because jockey Garrett Gomez chooses to ride #6 Irish Pepper it will probably go off at the unbettable odds of 5-to-2 or less. The filly looks like she has a pretty good chance to win first time out, but I won’t back her at anything less than 5-to-1.

Instead, I will be looking hard at debuters #2 Bell Canyon Road and #7 I Can Hear, who look just as good and should pay much better. Other first timers with an outside chance are #5 Ruby Slippers and #9 Champagneforchelle, but I won’t go for them if they’re dead on the board.

My bets are $250 to win on #2 Bell Canyon Road from 3/1 to 9/1 and $250 on #7 I Can Hear from 3/1 to 19/1. Also, if Bell Canyon Road drifts from 10-to-1 to 14-to-1, then I’m reducing my bet to $100.

Finally, if somehow #6 Irish Pepper is 5/1 or more at post time, then I’ll bet $200 on her; and I’ll take $100 on both #5 Ruby Slippers and #9 Champagneforchelle, only in the unlikely scenario where they fall into the 10/1 to 19/1 odds zone.

Historically, Harris Farms, Inc. has been tremendous with second-time starters. They own #2 Play Reveille, who broke slowly in her first start then took the lead before weakening in the stretch. The main knock on this horse is that jockey Joel Rosario opts for #7 Track Majesty.

Coming off a six-month layoff, Track Majesty should be right near the lead and is a huge threat to wire the field. She had a decent workout Feb. 9, but the rest are slow. However, that is common practice for this barn.

I give two other second-time starters a puncher’s chance: #4 Dream Season delivered a satisfactory rally in her Jan. 23 debut and #8 Roll Model ran OK first time out, also.

But I will bet $250 on both #2 Play Reveille and #7 Track Majesty at 2/1 or more.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 7 furlongs, 4 yo’s and up

Possible overlays                    Morning line

#1 Six Pack Man                        5/2
#3 Captain Charisma                   4/1
#4 Senor Afortunado                 3/1
#7 Herecometheirish               15/1

In his last two races, #4 Senor Afortunado was wide both times, but ran well nevertheless. Also, #1 Six Pack Man got a 4-wide trip on Dec. 26 when running a 70 Beyer Speed Figure, and #3 Captain Charisma was very wide when running a 68 BSF on Jan. 19.

Trainer Barry Abrams is wheeling back #7 Herecomestheirish within seven days of his last start. The last 19 times that an Abrams horse has come back this quickly, resulted in 5 wins, which paid an average of $11 each.

I will bet $200 on #4 Senor Afortunado at 2/1 and higher and $200 on either #1 Six Pack Man or #3 Captain Charisma — but only if they are 2/1 to 3/1, otherwise I am leaving them alone.

If for some reason both of them are 2/1 to 3/1, then I’ll bet the money on #1 Six Pack Man.

Finally, I’ll put $100 on #7 Herecometheirish at 5/1 to 19/1.

Maiden Claiming $50,000, 7 furlongs, 3-year-olds

Possible overlays                                    Morning line

#2 Benezit                                                 4/1
#6 The Major                                             12/1
#7 Philly Slew                                            12/1
#8 Eddie the Hat                                         2/1

In his Jan 1 race at one mile, #2 Benezit was very wide on both turns and still ran a 67 Beyer Speed Figure. And on Nov. 15, Benezit also ran well after breaking slowly, earning a 78 BSF.

Jerry Hollendorfer owns and trains #6 The Major, and this horse shows some sharp workouts, although it’s tough to win first time out at 7 furlongs. Just outside of him, #7 Philly Slew ran OK in his Jan 10 debut and could surprise with improvement.

The speed of the race clearly belongs to #8 Eddie the Hat, who might take them wire to wire if he can slow them down through the first half mile.

I’m betting $200 to win on #2 Benezit at 2/1 to 9/1 and $150 on #6 The Major if he’s 7/2 to 9/1. If these horses go off at 10/1 to 19/1 then  my bet is reduced to $100.

However, if either of these horses scratches or if The Major goes off at 20/1 or more, then I’ll put $200 on #8 Eddie the Hat at 2/1 and up.
