When trainer Jeff Mullins teams up with Garrett Gomez they're winning at better than 60 percent

Coming into the race, jockey Garrett Gomez had won on eight of the last 13 horses he rode for trainer Jeff Mullins.

Now, you can make it nine of 14.

In his debut race on Dec. 28, Mullins’ #6 Hasty Trend lagged toward the rear as rider Pedro Arambula was restraining the animal. Hasty Trend made a nice run that day in the stretch to finish up well.

But on Thursday, Gomez had Hasty Trend in the race from the opening bell. He ran beside speedster #1 Rochelle’s Jimmy before taking over in the stretch.

I planned to bet Hasty Trend at 2-to-1 or better, but horse players love betting Gomez and they hammered him to 6-to-5.

So I switched to plan B, which was to bet #1 Rochelle’s Jimmy who set the pace at 22-t0-1 before finishing fourth; and #4 Coleville, who finished second at 7-to-2.

imgres23It seems to me that the stable waited until the last minute to wager on #7 Dish the Dirt. This 4-year-old, who is trained by Peter Eurton and owned by his main man Frank Alesia, opened at just over 10-to-1 and stood at 9-to-1 as the field loaded into the gate. But after Dish the Dirt ran down 4-to-5 shot #9 Lavender Touch in the stretch, she paid a mere $16, or 7-to-1.

I’ll take it though, as I wagered $200 on this filly, who was running in her second race off a long layoff.

Jockey Joel Rosario, broke well with Dish the Dirt, but he grabbed hold of her and she was six lengths behind on the backstretch. She began noticeably accelerating midway on the turn, then unleashed a strong stretch drive in the middle of the track to nail the pace setter for the money.

Jeff Mullins trained #9 Lavender Touch, who sat off the flank of longshot #1 Junior’s Aces before taking the lead at the top of the stretch. She clearly led until a few jumps from the wire, but couldn’t last.

imgres22In a five-horse field populated with horses that hit the board a total of one time, a champion Canadian jockey and trainer teamed up on #4 Forster Hall to go wire-to-wire.

Woodbine-based jockey Patrick Husbands, who was voted Canada’s outstanding jockey in 2008, eased Forster Hall to the lead and was able to set reasonable fractions that left the horse with plenty in the tank at the finish. It was the first Santa Anita win for Husbands, 35, who has won Canada’s Sovereign Award for Outstanding Jockey a total of six times.

Forster Hall’s trainer Mark Casse, also from Woodbine, is no slouch either. He won the 2008 Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer, a prize he also took in 2006 and 2007.

I bet $200 to win on this horse and he paid $6.20. I was also monitoring the odds on #2 Izemine for a bet at 5-to-1 or more, but his post time odds were 7-to-2.

#6 Hasty Trend                                 5/2
#7 Cole’s Favorite                              5/1

Of the 10 horses running, six of them are making their second lifetime start. The most likely winner of the second timers is probably #6 Hasty Trend, who broke slowly in his last then made a nice run. During that race, which was run Dec. 28, jockey Pedro Arambula was sitting back in Hasty Trend’s saddle throughout the whole backstretch. Today, trainer Jeff Mullins is switching to Garrett Gomez, and Gomez won eight of the last 13 times he’s ridden for Mullins.

Jockey Michael Baze had a problem with #9 Cole’s Favorite in the stretch of his debut. Baze was sitting behind the pace setter and as he tried to rally up the rail another horse shot into the gap, forcing Baze to steady. Cole’s Favorite then lost his momentum. Today, trainer Rafael Becerra adds blinkers.

Also, if trainer Herbert Bacorn can teach #1 Rochelle’s Jimmy to ration his speed he can wire a field like this.

At odds of 2/1 or more, I will bet $200 on #6 Hasty Trend and I want $100 on #1 Rochelle’s Jimmy at 10/1 or more.

Also, if Hasty Trend goes off at 9/5 or less,  then instead of him I want $150 to win at 3/1 to 8/1 on #2 Belongs to Gotham, #4 Coleville and #9 Cole’s Favorite.

#9 Lavender Touch                                     5/2

Racing for the second time off a long layoff, #7 Dish the Dirt ran well enough to win at this level when she finished second in her debut. In that race, which was in December 2007, Dish the Dirt ran an 85 Beyer Speed Figure, which exceeds the median of 80 that usually wins at this class level.

On Dec. 5, #9 Lavender Touch broke about five lengths behind the field, but jockey Michael Baze had a handful of horse all the way up the backstretch. Baze finally let Lavender Touch run in the stretch of this turf sprint and she finished well to be third, running a 74 Beyer.

The Jay Robbins-trained #2 Sweet Pea was also making her debut in that same race. But it didn’t look like jockey David Flores was asking for much of an effort as she seemed to be breezing most of the way. Today, Garrett Gomez rides.

I will bet $200 on both #7 Dish the Dirt at 7/2 or more and #9 Lavender Touch at 2/1 or better.

If Lavender Touch dips to 9/5 or below, then I will bet $100 on #2 Sweetpea at 3/1 to 6/1 only.

Trainer Peter Eurton, who sends out #2 Izemine, has won a couple of similar races to this with first-time starters. Therefore, I will give him a shot in here, although I won’t bet  too much.

Of the horses who have run, none has approached the middle 80’s median Beyer Speed Figure that typically wins these races. Although he hasn’t been out since March, #4 Forster Hall might be ready to unleash a winning performance and I will watch the tote board for clues.

Mike Machowsky, the trainer of #3 Wizard Man, has a good record with debut horses, but most of them were 2-year-olds. Wizard Man has some decent workouts and the jockey is all right.

I will bet $200 on #4 Forster Hall at 2/1 to 7/2 only and $100 on #2 Izemine at 5/1 or more.

Results, Santa Anita Wednesday Race 6 — won $840

imgres21Trainer Rafael Becerra continued his success with recently laid off horses by getting #3 Raise Again to the winner’s circle at 4-to-1.

Over the last two years, Becerra has won with this same move at least six times, paying anywhere from $10 to $23.

No doubt, in this race, Raise Again got a perfect trip. Jockey Martin Garcia laid five lengths off dueling long shots #7 Black Point and #9 Makor’s Girl, who blazed through fractions of 21.88 seconds for the quarter mile and 44.62 seconds for the half.

That is really motoring for a 6-1/2 furlong race for $25,000 maiden claimers and both of them staggered home in the stretch. Raise Again came on the outside and “powered away” by 3-1/2 official lengths, according to the equibase chart caller.

In the wagering, I planned to bet $300 on Raise Again at 2-to-1 to 7-to-2, but reduce my outlay to $200 at 4-to-1 or higher. I was a bit unfortunate as the odds on Raise Again sat below 4-to-1 until the final minute when he blinked up to his final price of 4.2-to-1. So, I ended up betting $200 on him instead of $300.

Uncle Jeep with jockey Garrett Gomez won without difficulty after being bet to 4-to-5

He failed as the favorite at this class level three straight times, but on Wednesday jockey Garrett Gomez got #4 Uncle Jeep to finally break his maiden.

Trained by Mike Mitchell, this horse was no secret, as he closed at 4-to-5 to pay just $3.80.

The race began with #1 Eddie the Hat zooming to a clear lead down the backstretch with Uncle Jeep stalking him just a length or two behind. At the top of the stretch Uncle Jeep challenged the leader who tried to go with him. But Eddie the Hat couldn’t match strides and weakened.

It was Gomez’ first chance riding Uncle Jeep and his win continues the great recent success he and Mitchell have had together, winning 13 out of 36 races before this.

I was watching the tote board on a couple of second timers and ended up betting $200 on #6 Hammurabi at 9-to-2. Also, I put $150 on 18-to-1 shot #2 Cracked Code, who was making his debut.

#7 Black Point                                          15/1
#8 Natpolean                                            3/1

Coming off a recent long layoff has been a great money-making move for trainer Rafael Becerra in this type of race. In 2008, he did it three times: the first, on March 14 paying $23.60,  then on April 24 at $10, and the third time on Oct. 3 paying $15 . In 2007, it was Becerra again with the same move on Jan. 24 paying $19.20 and on Aug. 30 at $19.80.

Today, he has #3 Raise Again who ran OK at the level in Spring 2007 and can run the 65-70 Beyer Speed Figure necessary to win. Breaking beside her will be #4 Secret Potion, who ran a 57 Beyer in her debut for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer before he shipped her south from Golden Gate Fields.

Connie the Queen, #6, is another off a long layoff. She last ran July 16 in a Suffolk Downs turf race at 1-mile and 70 yards. In addition to traveling to lowly Suffolk, this mare’s seven races included stops at Aqueduct, Belmont, Saratoga, the Meadowlands and Finger Lakes.

If she gets bet, I will like her more.

It seemed to me that jockey Victor Espinoza steadied #8 Natpolean at the break during her first race on Nov. 29. She trailed for most of the way, but got more involved the next time she ran on Dec. 20. Her trainer Patrick Gallagher does better, I believe, with horses that have had at least two starts.

I will bet $300 on #3 Raise Again at 2/1 to 7/2, but only $200 if she drifts to 4/1 or higher.

Also, if #3 Connie the Queen is 2/1 to 7/2, then I’ll bet $100 to win on her, and I’ll put $150 on #4 Secret Potion at 3/1 to 7/1 only.

#2 Cracked Code                              10/1
#6 Hammurabi                                  4/1

The obvious horse in here is #4 Uncle Jeep, but the odds on this one are almost certain to be minuscule. Uncle Jeep was the beaten favorite in his last three races, he is ridden by money magnet Garrett Gomez and Mike Mitchell is by far the most accomplished and recognized trainer of the six in here.

Uncle Jeep’s morning line is 4-to-5 and even if he goes off at even money, he would only be a good bet if you thought Uncle Jeep had 65-to-70 percent chance of victory. That’s a difficult argument to make, considering this horse so far has lost five sprint races at this class level.

His previous jockey Victor Espinoza jumps to #3 Khurt Harry, and I don’t like him either because he raced greenly in his initial race on Dec 27. On that day, Khurt Harry broke slowly, remained in last on the turn and zig-zagged through the stretch while never showing anything.

However, second-timers #1 Eddie the Hat and #6 Hammurabi both ran OK in their debuts, posting Beyer Speed Figures of greater than 50. Richard Matlow, the trainer of Hammurabi, has been winning at 30 percent second time out for two years now, while Eddie the Hat flashed speed in a turf sprint and has four good workouts on his ledger.

Finally, debuter #2 Cracked Code has a shot, as the owners De Renzo & Hartly won with their only first timer. That horse was trained by Jeff Mullins and it paid $10.40 on Aug. 8.

I will bet $200 on both #1 Eddie the Hat and #6 Hammurabi at odds of 5/2 or more. Also, at 6/1 to 19/1, I’ll take a $150 shot to win on #2 Cracked Code.

Waddup G won easily for trainer Doug O'Neill after dropping in class and cutting back to a sprint

This horse seemed to be moving like a tremendous machine.

Waddup G obviously stood out in this 12-horse field as she eased to the lead while four-wide on the turn and pulled away to win by 6-1/4 official lengths.

The Doug O’Neill trainee was dropping into this low level claiming sprint from maiden special weight where she showed speed in three routes. Although she never got close to winning those races, she still ran the two best Beyer Speed Figures of this group.

Sure, sometimes they don’t reproduce the Beyers, but this time the class showed.

I was prepared to wager $150 on #12 Waddup G at 2-to-1, but she went into the gate at 9-to-5 and stayed there. Others I was watching included second timer #13 Shawnie Ora and #5 Tan Tan, a first-timer. But their prices drifted out of my odds ranges, so I couldn’t bet them either.

It is said that trainer Julio Canani likes to heavily bet his horses, so they usually offer little value

I never seem to be on a Julio Canani-trained horse when they win because they’re always bet too low. From what I hear, it’s because this trainer is a huge Southern California bettor.

However, wagering against Canani has been profitable in the past because, when he brings a suitcase full of money to the window, it boosts the odds on the other horses. And his ponies lose quite often.

But on Sunday, the Canani-trained #5 Miss Silver Brook made her first start a winning one. The gray filly laid off the pace early, then jockey Alex Solis rallied her on the outside where she mowed down #8 Ride Me Fast and #1 Storm the Church in the stretch.

But she paid a paltry $6.80, which is a price that doesn’t come close to covering the risks associated with a horse running in its first lifetime start. Even Secretariat lost the first time he ran.

But enough history. Back to this race: Trainer Jeff Mullins had two fillies going  — the 9-to-5 shot #6 No Saint But Sweet and #1 Storm the Church at 10-to-1. And the longer- odds horse ran better. I bet $150 on Storm the Church, a debuter, who broke slowly but came on strong with a run four-paths wide on the turn. She held the lead at the top of the stretch before fading to third.

Jockey Garrett Gomez was stuck behind a wall of horses at the eighth pole while riding #2 White Lamb, who I also bet $150 on at 9-to-2. This horse looked like he wanted to make a run, as race caller Trevor Denman commented, “White Lamb needs somewhere to go,” at the eighth pole —  and with a sixteenth of a mile to run  “White Lamb desperate to get through.”

But Gomez couldn’t find any room.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $32,000, 6-1/2 furlongs, 3-year-old fillies

Possible overlays                              Morning line

#5 Tan Tan                                               20/1
#12 Waddup G                                           5/2
#13 Shawnie Ora                                       12/1

I probably won’t end up playing anything in here.

I got a late start handicapping this one and I am looking at the tote board now. With 15 minutes to post, the favorite #12 Waddup G is 8/5. I like her because she ran a 63 Beyer Speed Figure in a route race, which is just below the median needed to win this race. But I wouldn’t bet her unless she’s at least 2/1.

Second-time starter #13 Shawnie Ora is 7-to-1 on the tote board now, but I’m only interested at 2/1 to 9/2. Also, #5 Tan Tan is an OK bet at 10/1 to 19/1, but she’s 21-to-1.

I’m noticing surprise betting action on #3 It’s Partytime, who is 10-to-1 on the morning line, but the tote board says 7-to-2. She has good early speed, which is much more valuable in shorter sprints than 6-1/2 furlongs.

I will bet $150 on #12 Waddup G at 2/1 or higher, $150 on #13 Shawnie Ora at 2/1 to 9/2, and $100 on #5 Tan Tan at 10/1 to 19/1.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden Special Weight, 6 furlongs, 3-year-old fillies

Possible overlays                                   Morning line

#1 Storm the Church                               12/1
#2 White Lamb                                       9/2
#4 Guided Wave                                       8/1
#6 No Saint But Sweet                              5/2
#7 Black Magic Mama                                7/2
#8 Ride Me Fast                                       5/1

I wouldn’t be surprised to see any filly but #3 Shadow Queen win this race. So, I’ll use the tote board as a guide, make some good bets at decent odds, and everything should work out in the long run.

Coming off a six-month layoff, #2 White Lamb should be near the front of the pack at the quarter pole. On July 5 at Arlington Park, White Lamb was bet to 6-to-5 in a 10 horse field and she flashed early speed before fading, however jockey Rene Douglas merely breezed her from the eighth pole to the wire.

The median Beyer Speed Figure to win this race is an 80, and trainer Jeff Mullins runner #6 No Saint But Sweet earned a 79 Beyer in her Dec. 7 debut. She broke slowly and came running late that day. Mullins also sends out first-timer #1 Storm the Church, who will have no-name jockey Pedro Arambula aboard, and she has several good workouts that make her a good bet at the right price.

On New Year’s Day, Mullins won with a hidden entry horse named Jaylo’s Mark at 10-to-1. She was running for the second time while Mullins’ first-time starter Katie G. finished seventh at 11-to-1.

Also debuting in this race is #8 Ride Me Fast. Although owner Mike Pegram hasn’t historically done well with this type, if Ride Me Fast gets some betting action then she’ll fit the profile of winning Bob Baffert first timers.

Finally, #4 Guided Wave broke slowly in her first race before making a decent run and she could wake up. And trainer Doug O’Neill must think highly of #7 Black Magic Mama because she ran in both the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies and the Hollywood Starlet. Today, she cuts back to a sprint, but I’d like her more if they were going 6-1/2 or 7 furlongs.

I will bet $200 on #8 Ride Me Fast from 7/2 to 9/1, but just $100 if her post time odds drift up to between 10/1 and 19/1. I want $150 on #1 Storm the Church at 7/2 to 19/1 and $150 on #2 White Lamb if her post time odds are 2/1 to 6/1.

If White Lamb’s odds fall out of the betting zone — either too high or too low — then I’ll  put $150 on #6 No Saint But Sweet at 2/1 or higher.

Note: I also plan to bet the ninth race today, which goes off at 4:38 p.m., but won’t be able to post it until 3:30.

Results, Santa Anita Saturday Race 5 — lost $450

Jockey Michael Baze gunned #13 Outlaw Yodler from the gate and never looked back

Jockey Michael Baze gunned #13 Outlaw Yodler from the gate and never looked back

The betting was frosty on #9 Thornmark, who was 2-to-1 on the morning line but opened up at 9-to-2. The five-year-old gelding, who was running for the second time after an 11-month layoff , finally closed at 5-to-2.

But when the gates open, Thornmark never made an impact as #13 Outlaw Yodler shot straight for the lead and dominated the race. Jockey Joe Talamo got #11 Hold This up for second at 7-to-1, while #10 Go Cory Go was off the board after being well backed at 3/1.

Outlaw Yodler had showed decent speed in his five previous tries, but always faded in the stretch. Today, trainer Peter Eurton removed the blinkers, which may have helped the 4-year-old relax.

In the end, I bet $300 on Thornmark and another $150 on Hold This.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 6 furlongs, 4 yo’s and up

Possible overlays                         Morning line

#3 All About Larry                             6/1
#4 Senor Afortunado                         8/1
#5 Olympic Force                             15/1
#9 Thornmark                                   2/1
#10 Go Cory Go                                 4/1
#11 Hold This                                   12/1

Several of these horses have the ability to win at this level. But if #9 Thornmark goes off at 2/1 or more then I will play him. Thornmark ran an 87 Beyer Speed Figure the only time he raced, which was almost a year ago — so he definitely fits. Also, trainer David Bernstein won at 19 percent last year, so he seems to know what he’s doing.

Others who were recently laid off that might run big include #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado, #10 Go Cory Go and #11 Hold This.

I’ll bet $300 to win on #9 Thornmark at 2/1 to 7/2.

But if Thornmark is 9-to-5 or lower, then instead I’ll take $200 to win on #3 All About Larry, #4 Senor Afortunado and #10 Go Cory Go, but only if their post time odds are 2/1 to 7/2.

Also, I’m betting $150 on #11 Hold This at 2/1 to 9/1 regardless of Thornmark’s price.
