Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden Special Weight, 6 furlongs, 3 yo fillies

Possible overlays                       Morning line

#1 Belated Bid                               8/1
#3 Mother Ruth                             3/1
#4 Indomitable                              10/1
#7 Beloved Deputy                        12/1
#9 Irish Gypsy                               4/1
#10 She’s Borracho                       8/1

For trainers Carla Gaines, Ted West, Patrick Gallagher, Craig Dollase, Eric Guillot, Jeff Mullins and Marty Jones: I feel sorry for you, because you have no chance.

Bob Baffert has you surrounded.

Baffert has three independent betting entries in this race and they are all less than 10-to-1 on the morning line. Over the years, Baffert has excelled at winning maiden races when he’s started two horses. In this race, he has three bullets.

The first, #1 Belated Bid is the Baffert filly who is least likely to win. She doesn’t have many fast workouts and the owner doesn’t often win with his first timers. If Baffert wins, er I mean when Baffert wins, he’ll  likely be getting his picture taken with either #3 Mother Ruth or #9 Irish Gypsy.

Mother Ruth, who is showing a purchase price of $425,000, has turned in a steady ledger of fast workouts for her debut. Garrett Gomez rides and he’s won on 12 of the last 25 Bob Baffert-trained horses that he’s ridden. No question, Mother Ruth looks good.

Maybe too good. Could Bob just be baiting us with Mother Ruth to get a price on #9 Irish Gypsy? After all, Irish Gypsy is owned by his friend Mike Pegram.

Irish Gypsy, who ran two lengths behind Stardom Bound on July 20,  is coming off an eight-month layoff and has shown quick, early accelleration in past races, so she has a shot.

And if all Baffert’s plans are foiled and the unforeseen happens, I will be covering first timers #4 Indomitable, #7 Beloved Deputy and #10 She’s Borracho. But only if their prices are right.

At the betting window, the cynic in me wants to go with #9 Irish Gypsy, but instead I will play the percentages and put $350 to win on #3 Mother Ruth at 2/1 or higher. Also, I want $150 on these three horses — #4 Indomitable, #7 Beloved Deputy and #10 She’s Borracho — but only at 10/1 to 19/1.

If Mother Ruth is bet to less than 2/1, then I will put $200 to win on #9 Irish Gypsy instead.

Maiden Special Weight, 5-1/2 furlongs, 3 yo’s and up

Possible overlays                              Morning line

#7 Raise the River                                   9/2
#8 Ribald                                               5/1

This is the first maiden race I have seen this year where 3-year-olds are facing older horses. Six out of the 10 runners in this race are 3-years-old, but I don’t happen to like any of them.

Both #7 Raise the River and #8 Ribald have good speed and are coming off recent layoffs. They both look better to me than the morning line favorite #10 Charlie and Chris.

So, I will bet $200 to win on both #7 Raise the River and #8 Ribald at odds of 3/1 or more.

Results, Santa Anita Saturday Race 6 — lost $100

Tyler Baze rode first-time starter Lt. Hopeful to a 7 furlong win (Flickr photo by Raymond)

The key to this race may have been that none of the horses who ran before had come within five points of the median winning Beyer Speed Figure for this class of 83.

In races that come up weak, I’ve heard it argued,  the first-time starters deserve a longer look. And #1 Lt. Hopeful, who went wire-to-wire, was being bet early in his debut then drifted up to 6-to-1.

Knowing all of this — I did not like Lt. Hopeful anyway because he did not fit my model of a winning first time starter. Instead, I was focusing on #4 Pauper’s Prize, whose odds were too low; #8 Caspian, who was scratched; #11 Indy Ride, whose odds were too high; and #10 Ricoriatoa, who I bet $100 on at 9-to-2.

Ricoriatoa was coming off a five-month layoff and ran poorly, showing no early speed and no late kick.

dollar-signsFor a few seconds, it looked like #11 River Spey was going to run away with this race. Jockey Tyler Baze, who was riding #8 Smokin Anne, was right where he was supposed to be on the backstretch: with a clear lead.

But on the turn, #11 River Spey rolled up beside Smokin Anne with hardly any encouragement from Jockey Jose Valdivia. Even the tone in race caller Trevor Denman’s voice showed that he was impressed as he said “River Spey goes right on by. River Spey the leader.”

Smokin Anne stayed on the rail, though, and found another gear. And for some unknown reason, River Spey faded fast in the stretch.

I bet $350 on Smokin Anne and collected $1,260 when she paid $7.20.

1993 Breeders’ Cup Classic: Bertrando looked to be home free then came Arcangues at 133-to-1

Japanese horse breeders are short on either English translators or common sense. So, please bear with me while I speak for the world: In the future, could you nice folks  in the land of the rising sun please tell us all when a Breeders Cup Classic winner dies?

Thank you. We’d appreciate it.

A couple of days ago, a spokesman for the Japanese Racing Association announced that Arcangues was dead — and that, oh yeah, he hasn’t been alive since October 2006. Yutaka Yokoyama said that Arcangues was last active as a stallion at Aomori-ken Keiba Bokujo where he died at age 18.

A French bred, Arcangues, with Jerry Bailey aboard, came out of nowhere to win the 1993 Breeders Cup Classic at 133-to-1.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden Special Weight, 7 furlongs, 3-year-olds

Possible overlays                       Morning line

#4 Pauper’s Pride                              5/2
#8 Caspian                                      5/1
#10 Ricoriatoa                                 12/1
#11 Indy Ride                                  12/1

Although their best Beyer Speed Figures are a shade under the 83 median for the level, #4 Pauper’s Pride and #8 Caspian have the type of running style that wins at 7 furlongs.

Trained by Vladimir Cerin, Pauper’s Pride chased Gotmymojoworkin to the wire on Jan 3 while blowing by a weakening Wall Street Wonder in the stretch. Wall Street Wonder returned next time out to win a maiden special weight race easily and has been competiting in stakes since.

Caspian is running in his second start. During his Feb 28 debut, Caspian lagged at the back of the six-horse field then rallied. Unless one of the three first timers show speed, #10 Ricoriatoa should get the lead. He chased quick fractions while wide on Oct. 17 at Keeneland and has been working out well.

Finally, #11 Indy Ride, a first-time starter for trainer Bill Spawr, may be a good bet at the right price.

I will bet $300 on the longer of the two prices between #4 Pauper’s Pride and #8 Caspian and $200 on the shorter price. If either of them are less than 3/1 then I won’t bet that one.  Also, I will take $150 on #11 Indy Ride at 10/1 to 19/1 only, but if Indy Ride doesn’t fall into the odds zone then I want $100 on #10 Ricoriatoa at 14/1 or less.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Maiden claiming $25,000, 5-1/2 furlongs, 4 yo’s and up

Possible overlays                                     Morning line

#8 Smokin Anne                                             3/1

A few horses, in their previous races, have exceeded the median winning Beyer Speed Figure of 68 for this level.

Speed horse #6 Hannah’s Moment ran a 73 Beyer on Jan. 3 when she was loose on the lead against $40,000 maiden claimers. A 7-year-old maiden, #7 Shezbad is coming off a 21-month layoff, but four of her five races in 2006-07 met or exceeded a 68 Beyer. And the 2-to-1 morning line favorite, #11 River Spey finished third on Jan. 30 while running a 73.

However, I am focusing on  #8 Smokin Anne. This 5-year-old mare has been off for 2-1/2 years, but showed good speed as a 2-year-old while finishing second against 10 maiden special weight rivals. Trainer Robert Hess has put a couple of quick workouts into her and if she’s well bet I will take it as a positive.

Therefore, I will wager $350 to win on #8 Smokin Anne at 2/1 to 7/2 only.

Pick Six pro Jimmy “The Hat” says —

Pick Six pro Jimmy The Hat says, action “without it, life seems pointless”

What would life be without action?

Not worth a damn, if you live for the Pick Six and your name is Jimmy “The Hat.”

“The name of the game is action, my friend. Action is the drug, the elixir, the buzz. Guys got to have the action, the juice. Without it, life seems pointless,” said Jimmy “The Hat” Allard, a professional horseplayer in Southern California.

Allard, a former small-time actor and boxing promoter, is the featured horse-betting wiseguy on the “Jockeys” television series, which has been airing on Animal Planet over the last several weeks. And watching him on TV got me thinking, just who is this cat they call Jimmy The Hat?

So I found a few stories about him through Google and noticed that Horseplayer Magazine wrote a feature on him in the March/April 2009 edition.

During my research, I found that Jimmy The Hat hit the Pick Six more than 200 times and is the only known gambler to win with tickets that paid more than $1 million in three consecutive years, according to a Seattle Post-Intelligencer story by Larry Lee Palmer.

Allard, a dapper dresser — who likes designer Italian shoes, leather jackets and Derby hats in the style of 1930’s — is an extremely likable chap.  A big part of his edge is that Jimmy The Hat has access to the barn area and he’s friends with jockeys as well as top trainers like Bobby Frankel, Bruce Headley, Adam Kitchingman, Vladimir Cerin and Jeff Mullins.

“If I see something or have a question about a horse, I have no problem discussing it with them,” Allard told Joe Kristufek of Horseplayer Magazine.

He also is aware that some trainers will be less than truthful with him or avoid answering his questions all together. So in Allard’s business, it’s essential to have the instincts to separate fact from fiction.

Allard is also in the paddock every race, often with trainer Kitchingman, studying racehorse body language, which helps him eliminate lame runners.

During his interview, reporter Palmer of the Seattle P-I walked with Allard through Santa Anita and the gambler was greeted with smiles and friendly chat from staff members like waitresses and maitre d’s.

But not everybody thinks Jimmy The Hat is good for the game. Bill Nichols, a former racing writer for the Press-Democrat , of Northern California wrote on March 9 that he emailed the Santa Anita publicity department recently inquiring about the potential conflict of interest Allard may have by associating too closely with jockeys and trainers. But Santa Anita officials defended The Hat.

“Jimmy Allard is friends with everyone at the track. He’s appreciative of jockeys and the danger they face daily. He’s the guy with an opinion who is well-liked, respected and owes no one. I wish we had another 10,000 of him here every day,” a Santa Anita publicity department rep wrote.

Allard rose to prominence in 2002 when he organized a class action lawsuit stemming from the Breeders Cup Pick Six scandal. Several employees of Autotote, the computer company that processes horse bets, conspired to tap into the computer system to take home the $3.1 million Breeders Cup Pick Six prize.

Allard believes that it was not an isolated incident.

“The idea that they only did it once was ludicrous,” Allard said in Horseplayer. “The government didn’t do anything about it, and neither did anybody in horse racing. The guys like myself, who split giant jackpots with those guys for nine years, all got screwed.”

Not only does Allard bet for himself, but his telephone rings throughout the day with other horseplayers seeking his opinions and trying to buy a piece of his Pick Six ticket.

“I got a stable of guys (who) want to know which entries I single in races, what I think of track conditions, what certain trainers say about their horses on the day of the race,” Allard told the Seattle P-I.

Allard considers himself a horseplayer, not a gambler. Southern California horse owner Don Stanley told me that one time he showed The Hat a football wagering ticket while at the track and Allard scoffed at the notion of betting NFL games.

In 2008, a reporter from the San Diego Union-Tribune followed Allard around Del Mar on a day with a $5 million Pick Six pool caused by numerous carryovers. Allard bet 25 horses on his $4,032 ticket, but he was not one of the 59 winners who collected $60,499.40 each.

Allard takes pride in knowing that he has developed a way to get a significant information edge on most of the other horseplayers. However, he needs to have the confidence to bet insane amounts of money to make it all worth while. One of his favorite sayings comes from trainer Brian Lynch “money lost, nothing lost; confidence lost, all lost.”

Racing fans admire Allard and often tell him that they dream of living the life of a professional horseplayer. But he knows that few people have nerves hard wired enough to handle it.

“Try walking out of the racetrack four or five days in a row stuck $30,000 with your stomach tied in knots, and you tell me how much you’d love to do what I do,” he told Horseplayer.

Jockey Tyler Baze won tight photo finish on #7 Lahcotah that paid $33.40

Bob Baffert had #13 Only Be Cause ready to run. This 2-to-1 shot led by a slim margin for much of the stretch, but  couldn’t quite hang in there as #7 Lahcotah nailed him in the last jump.

As the race began, Only Be Cause sat a length or two off of pacesetters #10 Downtown Banker, #5 Pemba at U.T.K. and Lahcotah. Entering the stretch, Downtown Banker shook free, as Lahcotah dropped back three lengths.

Jockey Jesus Rios was all over Only Be Cause as he pulled next to Downtown Banker in midstretch and battled head-and-head with him to the wire. But, surprisingly, Lahcotah came again on the outside with a quick surge to nail them both.

I bet $350 on Only Be Cause at 2-to-1.

Bob Baffert drops #13 Only Be Cause from $50,000 claiming to this horse’s lowest level in nine lifetime starts. On Feb. 14, Only Be Cause ran 7 furlongs and finished a game second to a well-meant first time starter named The Major.

In that race, Only Be Cause earned a 77 Beyer Speed Figure which is well in excess of the 68 winning median Beyer Speed Figure for this class.

Of the three first time starters, #11 Saccente looks like a play if the odds fall the right way.

I will bet $350 to win on #13 Only Be Cause only if he is 2/1 or better and I’ll take $150 on #11 Saccente at 10/1 to 19/1.

Comeandcatchme, #11, paid a shocking $140 to win for trainer Art Sherman

Comeandcatchme, #11, paid a shocking $140 to win for trainer Art Sherman

This group of maiden claimers appeared to be weak, as none of them approached the winning 68 median Beyer Speed Figure for this class in their past performances.

Therefore, a case could be made for spreading deep and landing on a 65-to-1 shot like #11 Comeandcatchme. But the way I look at these races is that the people who hit this horse will probably play more than 100 bombs before they cash another at 65-to-1.

In other words, in the long run it doesn’t pay to play these huge prices.

Comeandcatchme, who was making his second lifetime start for trainer Art Sherman, took the lead out of the gate in her Feb. 5 debut then faded away with very little urging from jockey Brice Blanc. On Saturday, this filly stalked the pace behind #10 Champagneforchelle and drew away in the stretch.

I bet $150 on first-time starter #4 Serena’s Echo and $100 to win on #8 Jet Set Lass, but neither of them hit the board.

Maiden King conquers So. Cal. maiden races

Possible overlays                           Morning line

#1 Lanie’s Way                                      4/1
#4 Serena’s Echo                                  15/1
#7 A Taco Short                                   3/1
#8 Jet Set Lass                                    12/1
#9 Play Reveille                                    9/2

The median Beyer Speed Figure for this race is a 68 and either this is going to be a weak race for the class or one of these runners is going to pop a lifetime best Beyer number.

The horse that has shown the quickest quarter mile burst is #8 Jet Set Lass and that’s important at 5-1/2 furlongs. Jet Set Lass is better than she shows in the Daily Racing Form where she hasn’t been less than 20-to-1 in her last four races.

In her last race on Feb 15, Jet Set Lass appeared to want to make a run in the stretch, but was stuck behind a wall of horses. When she finally got going, the race was nearly over.

Breaking from the rail, #1 Lanie’s Way ran well on Feb. 22, which was her first race back in six months. Also, #7 A Taco Short has been training well and she gained good ground in the stretch of her Feb. 5 debut. In that race, A Taco Short earned a 62, which is the best overall Beyer Speed Figure of these fillies.

Of the three first timers running, #4 Serena’s Echo is a good gamble at the right price.

Finally, #9 Play Reveille is owned by Harris Farms, Inc. whose maidens usually win early and are often heavily bet when they’re live. This Northern California farm has its own Thoroughbred trainer and race track which allows their runners to come to Southern California ready to go.

I will bet $150 to win on #8 Jet Set Lass at 5/1 to 14/1 but just $100 at 15/1 or more. Also, I’ll take $200 to win on #1 Lanie’s Way at 2/1 to 7/2 only, and $200 on #7 A Taco Short at 3/1 and up. If the Harris Farm money shows up knocking #9 Play Reveille to 2/1 to 7/2, then I will take $200 on her while canceling the bets on Lanie’s Way and A Taco Short.

Finally, I’ll wager $150 to win on first timer #4 Serena’s Echo at 10/1 to 19/1 only.

#2 Atta’ Girl                                    7/2
#8 Juicy Lucy                                  3/1

I’m hoping that #4 Golden Rocketship, the 8-to-5 morning line favorite, takes lots of money. This filly has good speed, but that quality is more valuable in races that are shorter  than 6-1/2 furlongs.

Alex Solis looks live on #2 Atta’ Girl, who was four paths wide on the turn Feb. 28 then was caught in tight quarters in the stretch. She can run better than the 67 Beyer Speed Figure she earned, but she would not need to improve to take this.

Breaking from the outside, #8 Juicy Lucy was pinned on the inside in the stretch in the same race Atta’ Girl comes out of and she might run better with clear sailing.

I will bet $300 on #2 Atta’ Girl at 5/2 or more and $300 on #8 Juicy Lucy at 3/1 or better.
